Road to WC 2014

So, after the Euro 2012 finished in style with Spaniards anally raping the pizzamakers, it is time to turn our eyes towards WC 2014 qualifications. Our qualifying group is one of the easiest we could imagine, but as always, it will take 120% from our boys to actually do it.
We are in group E:
Norway
Slovenia
Switzerland
Albania
Cyprus
Iceland

Although we've got the best possible team from Pot 1, in the remaining pots we were not so lucky. Switzerland is a tricky team to play, they've got some interesting youngsters coming up and they will be eager to revenge their loss again us which costed them the qualification to the WC 2002. Albania, Cyprus and Iceland are teams, which can cause you all sorts of problems, when they play at home and can never be taken easily. But bottom line, it will all depend on how we will present ourselves on the field. If we will be the team from our last qualifiers, we can easily finish bottom of the table. If we will be the team from the second part of WC2010 qualifiers, then we have good chances to make it. Our first two matches are against Switzerland and Norway in September. 4 or 6 points from those two matches would of course be great, 3 would be OK, 2 would be so-so, but anything less than that would put us in trouble right from the beginning, so the start will be as important as ever in this kind of competition.

Anyway, it would be a great experience to qualify and experience some authentical Samba in the middle of Copacabana...

Indeed it would be fantastic. I'm sure in that case you'd go there.

The group is more than doable, but it's going to be far from easy. We are not exactly what we'd like to be any more. I must say that I'm not that confident about Stojanovič. I hope he'll prove mo wrong though, like Kek did. Can't wait for the qualifiers to start.

very manageable group but the Swiss have a very promising generation coming up and Norway are always difficult to beat with their direct style.

Albania, Cyprus, Iceland are all tough away trips, they probably won't do anything away from home against the "top three" but I could see for example a team like Swiss dropping points in Albania

not the best start for Slovenia, 2:0 loss to Switzerland in Ljubljana. Slovenia had their chances but couldn't convert any while the Swiss scored twice from long range. It doesn't get any easier as Slovenia's next match is away to Norway, who also lost their opener to Iceland

J. Handanovic; Brecko, Suler, Cesar, Jokic, Radosavljevic (Kurtic 80), Bacinovic, Kirm, Birsa (Ilicic 61), Dedic (Ljubijankic 54), Matavz

This was one of the poorest performances I've seen from us. Really piss poor. With that kind of play we stand no chance even in this easy group.

Now we get to play Norway, a team that never really suited us. Not even in our best years.

Two defeats at the start of the qualifiers would pretty much end our hopes of getting to the world cup.

2:1 loss in Norway with Norway scoring their winning goal on a penalty kick in the final minute.

In this even group you can't write them off yet, despite the two losses, as they played their two direct rivals, but there is little room for error anymore

We didn't deserve this defeat. It's cruel. I thought we played much better than against the Swiss, we were more organised and determined. Still we make too many mistakes. Our midfield is bad. Our strikers don't get the balls. Defense tends to make capital mistakes. There's a lot of work to be done yet.

The penalty was non existant. The otherwise solid ref made a big mistake there, and it cost us a valuable point.

It's not 0 points from two games. Yes it's against the supposed direct opponents but playing like this it won't be any easier for us against other teams. I'm afraid it's all over for us already.

I obviously don't follow closely, but looking from a far this doesn't look like the strongest Slovenian team in years, and I wasn't convinced when you hired Stojanovic

Yes, I think that's it for us. One win out of four games is very poor. We went into these qualifiers pretty confident about our chances. The general feeling was we just need to play it through and we are in Brazil. The group was considered to be the easiest we ever had. I still think that in normal circumstances we should be more than capable of making it to atleast that second place, becouse the group really isn't the toughest one. In normal circumstances yes, but things are far from that in our camp. What exactly is wrong I can't say. I think it's a matter of many things - the selektor, the players, the NZS - this combination just doesn't seem to work.

So if a miracle doesn't happen ...

Stojanovic has resigned, the results haven't been good under him and I was skeptical from the beginning. Two wins in nine says it all...

The candidates seem to be Srecko Katanec (unemployed), Tomaz Kavcic (U21 manager), Milan Miklavic (unemployed), Eddy Reja (unemployed), Darko Milanic (Maribor)

The next match will most likely be a friendly against BiH in February before World Cup qualification resumes in March

Srecko Katanec is the new manager, the most logical choice but its probably too late to mount a run to make at least the playoffs, but this group is open so you never know.

No way.

One thing we can be certain about - Srečko will sort things out. I mean those in the dressing room. He will not tollerate crap from his players. Once he does that things will improve on the field too.

Of course we can't expect miracles from him again. This is a wholle new story. But with him in the saddle atleast we all know what to expect from his team - an honest fight for the national colours.

I think these qualifiers are long gone. Yes the theory still exists, but realisticaly it's over. What he must do now is to prepare a solid foundation for EC ones.

I'm confident about all this.

Sorry but I didn't expect you to give up so easily.
With 6 games to play we are merely 4 points behind 2nd place (Norway) and we play against those Skandinavian wankers at home. It's far from over, but we have to start winning against Iceland and the continue.

this group (along with Croatia's and maybe that Italy group) are the main candidates where the runners-up don't make the playoffs. This group is too equal in terms of quality so that is very possible
