7.2.2007: Slovenia - Estonia friendly

OK, the first game under Matjaz Kek is getting closer, so I thought we might open a thread to discuss it. Kek already made a selection of players:

Goalkeepers:
S. Handanovic (Rimini)
J. Handanovic (Koper)

Defenders:
Cesar (Marseille)
Mavric (Koblenz)
Ilic (Domzale)
Jokic (Gorica)
Morec (Sturm Graz)
Filekovic (Krylia Sovetov)
Cipot (Maribor)

Midfielders:
Komac (Djurgarden)
Zlogar (Anorthosis)
Ceh (Khimki)
Koren (West Bromwich)
Sukalo (Koblenz)
Vrsic (Zilina)

Forwards:
Novakovic (Koln)
Lavric (Duisburg)
Birsa (Sochaux)
Dedic (Parma)
Cimerotic (Domzale)

Nice to see Cime back.
But there's no Borut Mavric, no Acimovic and no Knavs...

Caipirinha: 6 €
Brazilian NT shirt: 70 €
Flight to Rio de Janeiro: 400 €
Seeing Italian NT kicked out of major tournament: PRICELESS

Hatelist:
Juvemerdus
Partizan
Associazione Culo Milan
Lazio
Barcelona de mierda
Real de puta Madrid
Manchester Shitnated
Liverfool
Dinamo Kyiv
Panathinaikos
Olympique Marseille
Bayern
New England Shitriots
All NBA and NHL except Red Wings

It's time for Handanovic to step up, as for Acimovic&Knavs they are still looking for a team. A good signal to them that they will have to play if they want to play for the NT (No more credit for the good plays years ago :frustrat

I'm actually very pleased with the selection as well.

No Mrga? OK. In the last couple of games he made terrible mistekes, with all the respect to him and giving him full credit for everything he did for us in his time - and he was outstanding - I think Handa deserves a chance. He's a great young keeper, showing his worth every time he gets a chance. I think it's his time now!

No Mile and Sandi! Well done there Kek! Mile is a player we'll need, that's for sure, but he's out of action and even a fit Mile is only worth half of any decent player physicwise. We don't need him to walk arround looking half dead after 10 minutes. The same goes for Knavs. Everyone knows how much I like him, but I'm sorry he's been out of action for more than half a year, in that time noone ever heard of him, he's in no condition to be in the team. Find a club, start playinf regulary and you'll be back in. That's what Kek told both and that's what it should be like. There should only be a place for the top in the NT. Srečko's time is over and that was so damn specific it's no point in even trying to copy that.

I like Cime being back, he's been in fine form and injuries kept away from him for some time now. I'd like to see Rakovič too. Other than that I'm happy with the selection he made there.

So the game is on today. Lets see what this new team has to offer. Again it's a promissing team, full of young players, full of potential and quality. I hope this time it will be lead the right way.

For the start, this is the team Kek picked up for todays game using a new system for us, 4-3-3.

Like I said, it looks promissing, it'sa very young side, an agressive one and of coursevery offensive oriented. Just a few correctionsfrom my side thoughp . I'd leave out the very unreliable Matej Mavrič and replace him with either Cipot, who's doing a good job there for maribor of the new boy Morec, who plays in that position constantly for Sturm. Also I'd play Jokič instead of Filekovič. The young Jokič was one of the brightest spots in our very miserable looking team in the last few games under Oblak, he's defenetly got the potential and quality. Than maybe, I'd try and put Cipot instead of Žlogar in the defensive midfeilder position. Cipot playing there was one of the best things Oblak did, he was on fire. The games he played against Belarus, Geermany and I think Norway were really impressive, so I'd really like to see him there again to see if he's still got what it takes. But I think Tonči can do very well there too.

So all the best to our team and our new selektor today! May this be a successfull new start into what will hopefully be a new golden era!

Same here
I would play Filekovič in 2nd half maybe sub for Ceh, if we need wing power, Jokic would cover the defense and Filkovic would try some dribblings, because when he is fresh he has the ability for that (last 15-20 min).

Acimovic is in Austria Wien since a week or two (yeah, a little juicy after the thing with Ceh), currently is in preparation in Marbella and is said to be momentarily fit for like 30-45 minutes.

The way you guys describe his performance as of the last couple of month is a bit of a shocker, I have to say. Let's hope he will be fit again and deliver the goods for the club and the NT. Good luck for today.

Alexx I'm affraid that's all you'll get from Ačimovič. I mean, being fit for him means he can normaly play one half at best. If you want to get the bestout of him that is. He's not a full game player, never was. It's a sad thing really.

So we won a friendly afterall! That's a bit of a shocker.p seriously though, our NT still has a lot of work to do in order to get somewhere near where it once was. It was not a partuculary bad performance, especially concidering the circumstances - a new selektor, new system, avery short time to get to know eachother, only one serious training togather. The team fought well, in that department I've got nothing to hold against them. In terms of football and gameplan though, there's still a lots to do. This was a friendly against a modest oposition, what lies ahead though are tough qualification games. Starting with Albania away and Holland at home in a months time. Not much time, but lets hope Kek can come up with some solutions.

That is a sad thing indeed. And that was the case in Lille too, even before that broken ankle against Sochaux?

Most of the time yes, I think that was the case for Lille too. Katanec found him a perfect rolle in the team, the joker one, when he introduced him sometime in the second half when he came in fresh and could do something with his technique. There were very few games I saw him play full time and that he actually had a good game throughout.

Well, thanks for the information, even if it lowers my expectation for the spring season to come, as we may have a choice of 6 strikers on the team, but no real directing midfielder to feed them....
