Nasvidenje Tolar!

So we bid farewell to Tolar,:frownani: :frownani: our first and last official currency as an independent country.

We now accept euro.

What do you guys think? I know there's a general feeling of satisfacion about it, but I for one feel very sad. It's almost like giving up on a part of our independency. For me it's much more than just money, just a change of currency. It's a sad day for me!

you shouldnt take it as a sad thing. Changing to the Euro is a way to officially make a compliment to your country's economic policy!

wasn't the Tolar though very poor is comparison to other foreign currency? I mean I think even Kuna was better, I think 6 kuna for every $1

still it is true that losing that currency loses some identity but at least the country is better off

Say bye bye to low prices, and hello to capitalism at it's finest p

I'm not economist and know crap about it, but I think Tolar was a good, solid currency.

Compliment to our economy? Fuk that. Nowadays you get compliments for every crap you make. I don't need that. Some old fuk comesby and congratulates us on taking over euro?

I don't know if I get what you say here correctly, but even though you got 240 tolars for 1 euro, that isn't necessarily bad. What's important is how stable the currency is. I mean you got around 1000 italian liras for 1 euro when Italy adopted euro, and italian lira wasn't a bad currency at all. Same with tolar, it was very stable currency, specially in the last few years.

Well, this is not like losing your language or culture or anything. We just changed our currency, so that now we have the same as most of western Europe. Now when you go abroad, you don't have to look for exchange offices anymore, we will be able to compare prices here with other places without calculating, it will be easier to do business with companies abroad, etc. All in all, I am happy about the change, finally we have the currency where you don't need to calculate in millions...

The thing is, this is not a fault of euro. If they would change back to German marks, the prices would go up again. The problem is with the greedy shop and bar owners who exploited the huge economic change and raised their prices enormously. It happened here as well to some extent, but I think our civil organizations did quite a good job to monitor the prices and alert the public when they raised significantly, so the big companies were discouraged to do too much of a dirty business.

I understand, but we didn't have referendum for euro either. Only referendum to join EU (and Nato ).

You can pay in every shop, pub, etc. with tolars until 14.1.2007.
After that, you can change tolars into euros until 1.3.2007 in all banks.
After that, you can change tolars into euros only in the central bank of Slovenia (they will be changing notes without time limits, but they will be changing coins until 31.12.2016).

Not me man! I was against joining EU and thus against the change of currency to euros. EU is a joke! I mean, we lived in simmilar artifficial formation for 50 years and badly wanted to get out. Only 15 years after that we so willingly got into another one - which is the same old crap, just wraped in a nicer paper. I have a bad feeling about this wholle EU thing, I don't think this thing will last long! Not even as long as our former country.

And your right Walter, EU won't last long. The stumbling point will be the EU constitution... Every EU country must accept the EU constitution but this didn't happen and I believe it will never happen If I remember right France didn't accept it the first time. In 2007 Germany is in charge of EU and they have a plan to take another try for the EU constitution. If they want the EU to work every member country must accept it, that's how's it writen.
The EU constitution will be the stombling block that will cause the downfall of the EU

Sorry my friend, but comparing EU to Jugoslavija is ridiculous. OK, richer members pay more into the common source, but this is where every similarity stops. We have a market economy now unlike the planned one and I hope you know what is the difference. The healthy companies survive, the unhealthy ones go to hell, which is how things are everywhere in nature. Unlike in Jugoslavija, where you had state protected companies who couldn't go bankrupt no matter how crappy they were doing. We have democracy, where (at least in principle) the government is chosen by the people, unlike in Jugoslavija, where the leaders were chosen by Communist party for life. Our companies now are able to import/export stuff from other EU countries without paying import/export tax. You can buy stuff in the whole EU without having to pay import tax for it and without having to tell the border officers what you bought (I still remember I had to smuggle my first PC computer from Austria, because you couldn't buy it here :rollani: ). I cross Italy twice a week and I am sick and tired of showing my passport to the border officers, can't wait until these controls are removed as well. Now with euro, I don't have to change my money when I go abroad either. There's no comparison, really.
And I think that giving away our currency in favor of euro, is much less of an "independency giveaway" than having our sky controlled by Italian air forces (which is a consequence of joining NATO).

Sure the constitution is a big problem, but I think there are even bigger ones. The biggest as I see it is the fact the Europe is just too diverse, there's too much history involved there. It just can't work. Sure, it's a good idea and I think there should be some sort of an economic union between all Eropean countries but that's about it. Everything more than that wont work.

So that we wont take it all so seriously, here's a video of our financial minister, making the first ever euro raise from a cash machine - or atleast he tried to.

Why exactly? Do you have any rational arguments or you just don't like EU?
