Sisic turned down Blues
Birmingham City, Thursday June 17 2004
Birmingham City have reportedly failed in a bid to bring Slovenian winger Mirnes Sisic to St Andrews.

The 22-year-old underwent a trial in the Midlands and impressed manager Steve Bruce enough to offer him a contract.

However, with Olympiakos having also made a late bid for his services, Sisic thought it better to remain in Greece then try his luck in the Premiership.

"I was on trial and the club were pleased with me," he said.

"We made an agreement that I would join the club at the start of the preparations for the new season, but then Olympiakos made an offer. It was an offer you cannot turn down."

Now I remember that I've posted something about the guy before in the Transfers thread. Here's what I posted:

.......................................

No, Grki so bili vedno znani po pretiravanju, a vendarle...

------------------------------------

The article says that a 22 year old Mirnes Šišic is about to sign for Olympiacos. He was playing for Rudar Velenje and than went to amateur league in Austria before moving to a third division side in Greece. It looks like he was shining there as Olimpiacos steped up and want to sign him. He was also on a trial at Birmingham city who imediatly wanted to sign him but than Olimpiacos finalised the deal. He is supposed to be very tallented.
Has anyone heard of him before? Anyway I hope the guy prooves his worth and developes into a good player, we need those badly!

Not to be pretentious, but I believe this proces is somehow normal. imo, Slovenia will gain more profit in the coming years from it's share of talent. Harvest time.

From your mouth to god's ears Bins. However I thought if ever harvest time was ever to come would be after Euro 2000 and WC 2002, unfortunatly nothing came of it. And may I sound as pesimistic as possible, I don't think it ever will, atleast not in the big scale. I'd be satisfied with maybe one good transfer to west european clubs every few years.

Well, I do believe it will happen. Perhaps gradually, but slowly, but it will. If you see how guys like Acimovic, Ceh, Botonjic, now Sisic, later perhaps Dedic, Kokot, Semler... are gradually finding their way to the top leagues, Slovenian football will grow. Obviously not all talents will make it to the absolute top, but the same deal goes for Croatians and Serbs. For every Kezman or Simic, there are a number who left with big hopes but ended as an anonymous nobody. I cannot say where you'll end up on a global scale, but i'm 100% sure that Slovenian football has quite a bright future to look forward to.

It's an old Slovenian saying, and it means that I hope whatever you say will come true.

You are right there. Of course we can't expect too much from our small footballing talents pool. As you say, some will defenetly find their way through, after all the quality is what really matters and if you have it it doesn't matter where you come from. But of course as a fan of our football (true that mostly on the NT level) I'd whish to see more of our players play abroad in big clubs.
