Best Slovenian player of the past 50 years

Today NZS will unveal who is the best slovenian player of the past 50 years. This contest has been going on for a while now and it will all be clear today. There are really only three serious contenders for the prestigiuos award;
-Brane Oblak
-Srecko Katanec
-Zlatko Zahovic

My vote would go to Oblak, but any of the three would deserved, and I won't be dissapointed or anything if someone else takes it. I belive Zaho is in the lead by quite a margine so I think the honours will go to him. It has a lot to do with the fact that Zaho is undoubteby the best since our independence and the other two are a bit older, especially Oblak. But still I say Onlak, since he was a rolle model player of his time, one of the best in the world back than, playing for Schalke and Bayern Munchen which I belive also captained for a while. A very disciplined player, physical, hard working. A member of a great jugoslav NT of the 70's, participating in world cups and euros. Not to mention he got a record breaking fee for his transfer to Bayern (I think) of his time.
Of course Katanec played an important rolle, playing In Germany for Stuttgart, and than latter in Italy for Sampdoria winning a scudeto, also a member of the jugoslav NT. He too was a hard working player.
We all know what's Zaho's story, starting at Partizan, going to Portugal Vittoria Guimaress, Porto, than Olympiacos Greece, Valencia, and now back to Portugal to Benfica. A great career, the most influencial NT player, best scorer, all in all, the best since we got independent.
Your thoughts?

I hope Katanec takes it. I don't like the other two and I don't care how good they were/are. Srečko was good enough to grab the aword as a player, plus he has done soooo much off the pitch to our football that he has to get some kind of appreciation.

Nina we are talking about best PLAYER here, bot person, coach or anything but player. I respect Srecko very much, for everything that he's done for us, ha's a great guy and all, but Oblak as a player was better IMO. If we were to judge by personal qualities that Zaho shouldn't be even close, but as a player he's great, since we are independant unquestionably the best. Over the past 50 years though, it think noone tops Brane! Like it or not!

Well as far as I know the contest isn't called the best guy amongst the football players of the past 50years, or is it!

hard decision...I guess if the best player is voted by the media and public will Zahovic win. If it's controled by the NZS, then will Oblak win...

It's official, the best Slovenian player of the past 50 years is Brane Oblak!
About 1500 Coaches, players, sports journalists, and other sports workers were participating in evaluating this decission. If I got it right on the radio Oblak got 430 votes, second placed Katanec 376, and third Zahovic 240 votes.
So there you have it!

I would too, as I missed them due to the fact that I wasn't born yet then. It wouldn't hurt if TVSLO would do a retrospective or something similar, like Eurosport for example where they show old CL or NT games

Yes I like the idea too, some kind of retrospective of the great footballing events of the past, not necessarily only with ex-jugoslav team in it, but in general. And of course some of the great performances of our Slovenian NT from the past woul fit in perfectly also.

That's not a bad idea Romario! It does look a bit unrealistic though, but maybe if a few more would write *hint* *hint* they might hear us!
