the WC 2006 and EC2008 qualifiers

I have borrowed the following article from the Romanian forum as I find it very interesting. It say a lot about how might the qualifying groups look like for those competitions. As I understand this isn't final yet as it awaits FIFA aprooval.
Here it is:

Qualifying formats improved

Thursday, 10 July 2003
The UEFA Executive Committee has decided to change the formats for the qualifying stages of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008™.

Lucky 13
The improved qualification format for the World Cup will see 13 European teams qualifying from 51 participating nations, with Germany qualifying automatically as the host nation. The 51 teams will be drawn into three groups of seven teams and five groups of six teams with the eight group winners and the two best runners-up qualifying automatically. The six other group runners-up will contest play-offs to decide the other three teams to qualify. The new format will be proposed to FIFA for approval.

EURO 2008™ format
The improved format of the qualification for UEFA EURO 2008™ is even more straightforward. With Austria and Switzerland qualifying automatically as hosts, the 50 participating teams will be seeking 14 qualifying slots. The teams will be divided into one group of eight teams and six groups of seven teams with qualification for the seven group winners and seven runners-up.

More competitive matches
UEFA Chief Executive Officer Gerhard Aigner said that the new formats would involve no extra matches but ensure a full use of competitive dates. "The majority of European national associations wanted more games of competitive character," he said. "We have managed to do this while still allowing sufficient dates for friendly matches."

What do you dudes think?

NT matches always screws teams, not makes them in

Seeing the Romanian vs. Slovenia saga, Slovenia was pretty damn lucky to get in WC 2002

But on anycase

Hope to see you in 2006, good luck in 2004 and its too far apart to think about 2008

I think that it is great for us Especially the EURO 2008 one. In our current position we would have qualified automatically for Portugal if they were using that format As long as that is the chosen format and we are not put in a group with 3 World Class teams I say that we have great chances for EURO 2008 . . . But then again, that is so long away

Well the draw for WC 2006 is this december I belive. So I think this format would suite us better, not only us though. It think that the proposed changes are a change to the better as we coul see more NT matches, and more chances for us to get to the big event.
Same goes for the proposed changes for the EC 2008 qualifications.

Well, by reading this article, I have gathered (with my small knowledge of Slovenian) that these are the pots for the WC2006 draw. We have been in the second best pot, which means that we wont have to hard a group (hopefully). Here is the article from www.sloveniansoccer.net

Skupina 2: Nizozemska, Hrvaška, Belgija, Danska, Rusija, Irska, Bolgarija, Slovenija
Skupina 3: Poljska, Romunija, Škotska, SČG, Švica, Grčija, Ukrajina, Slovaška
Skupina 4: Avstrija, Islandija, Finska, Norveška, BiH, Izrael, Latvija, Wales
Skupina 5: Madžarska, Gruzija, Belorusija, Ciper, Estonija, Sev. Irska, Litva, Makedonija
Skupina 6: Albanija, Armenija, Moldavija, Azerbajdžan, Ferski otoki, Malta, Liechenstein, San Marino, Luksemburg, Andora, Kazahstan

It means how the teams are ranked in groups. Best teams are in group 1, a little worse ones in group 2, etc. It´s pretty obvious, isn´t it?

How do they plan to create three groups with seven teams, if the teams are placed only into six groups by FIFA ranking. If there were to be seven teams in a qualifying group shouldn't there be seven FIFA ranking groups?

The sixth group contains 11 teams instead of 8.

Yes, it will be interesting. I like it that way though, because we are in Pot 2, and that gives us some easier teams to go against then if we were to be in Pot 3 Also, in the new formats, the top two of every group qualify automatically dont they??

NZS we were allready in pot 2 for the past qualifiers.
And no read the article more carefully, for the WC 2006 winners of groups plus two best runners up qualify automaticly, whille the other six second placed teams go to the play offs. In the proposed format for the qualifiers for the EC 2008 it is that the winners and all second placed teams qualify directly.

So people even though it's only two days since our failure, we shoul look forward! The future isn't necessary dark for us, we should be optimistic about it!
On december 5th, the draw will be held for the WC 2006 qualification. Possible seedings of the teams have been posted previously and I do think we will end up in that second group which is good. It means we could avoid some very tricky teams, we must realise though that there are no easy opponents anymore.
So what would your pick for our qualifying group be (if the seedings are as posted above)?

My group would be:

Italija
Slovenija
Poljska
Avstrija
Madžarska
San Marino

Three neighbourly derbys would be great (if we'd get to play Italy in Trst that would top it all) not far to travell, realistic chances, I think a super group for us!
