By Football Italia staff

Maxi Lopez bagged a brace with new buys Daniele Baselli and Danilo Avelar on target as Torino beat Savona 6-0.

The friendly gave Coach Giampiero Ventura promising signs for the season ahead.

Argentine Maxi Lopez is already on form by scoring both goals in the first half.

Pontus Jansson and Amauri found the net after the restart, as did summer signings Baselli and Avelar.

Ex-Atalanta midfielder Baselli scored the goal of the day, cutting back on to his right foot and curling into the far corner.

Torino pay the penalty at Rennes
By Football Italia staff

Torino suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Stade Rennais, seeing a penalty saved after the French side went down to 10 men.

The Granata fielded a 3-5-2 formation including summer signings Daniele Baselli, Danilo Avelar and Afriyie Acquah.

There were early chances for Abdoulaye Doucoure, Pedro Mendes and Baselli, while Fabio Quagliarella blasted over the bar.

A defensive error was almost costly, but Pedro Henrique couldn’t keep his shot down when one-on-one with Daniele Padelli.

Quagliarella was again set up by an Avelar free kick only to skim the bar, but on the stroke of half-time Padelli needed a desperate save to deny Giovanni Sio.

Rennes took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to an absolute screamer from 25 metres unleashed by Mendes.

Substitute goalkeeper Ichazo did well to deny Pedro Mendes a second. Toro thought they were back in the game when Mendes brought down Josef Martinez for a penalty, getting himself sent off in the process. However, the Granata’s appalling record from the spot continued into the summer and Cesare Bovo’s effort was saved.

Stade Rennais 1-0 Torino

Stade Rennais: Costil; Armand, Mendes, Mexer; Moreira (Danzè 46), Sylla (Fernandes 46), André (Grosicki 70), Baal; Doucoure, Pedro Henrique (Hunou 67), Sio (Lenjani 75)

Torino stroll to Pro Vercelli win
By Football Italia staff

Torino continued their preparations for the new Serie A season with a 5-0 thrashing of Pro Vercelli.

Goals from Josef Martinez, Daniele Baselli and Bruno Peres put Giampiero Ventura’s team in total control at half time at the Stadio Brunod di Chatillon.

Ventura: 'Torino need ferocity'
By Football Italia staff

Coach Giampiero Ventura explains he doesn't want stars to join Torino but rather players with 'ferocious determination'.

The Granata are juggling a number of options for their offence, largely within a budget of €10m, but the tactician seems not to be too concerned about the specifics.

“We can make any name you like,” he told Sky Sports Italia. “I read of [Roma's Adem] Ljajic, [Palermo's Andrea] Belotti, [Hull City's Abel Hernandez].

“But the problem isn't the name of the player coming in, but his drive, his humility, and his ferocious determination.

“It's obvious that I want someone who wants to become a champion.

“That's the direction we're working towards. The club knows that and is moving accordingly.”

I love the way management has gone about the transfer windows these past several years. Seems like Petrachi, Ventura, and Cairo are all on the same page, and the results have been great both in terms of bringing in contributors, and replacing outgoing players who seemed almost irreplaceable at the time.

This isn't something you hear all the time... but kudos to the entire front office.

Agreed. I can't help but think that the team will be much stronger right out of the gate this season since 95% of the squad has been together since July 1. Last season, it seemed as thought the first 3-4 months were about the new players (signed at the last minute) learning the system.

Would love to see enough success this season to allow us to re-qualify for Europe and make a good case for keeping the better players. The pressure on Glik will likely continue.

Cairo: ‘De Laurentiis my lucky charm’
By Football Italia staff

Torino President Urbano Cairo calls Napoli’s Aurelio De Laurentiis ‘my lucky charm’, and says the club’s transfer campaign is over.

The Partenopei patron declared yesterday that Toro’s Nikola Maksimovic was not worth more than the €12m being offered, and Cairo recalls similar situations for other players.

“De Laurentiis is my lucky charm,” Cairo told Radio 24.

“Years ago, he wanted [Angelo] Ogbonna and offered €5m, then I sold him [to Juventus] for €15m. He offered €10m for Darmian, and now we’ve sold him [to Manchester United] for €20m…

“Torino’s transfer campaign is officially over. We’re satisfied, even if the final verdict will come on the pitch.

“We sold Matteo Darmian because we’d made a promise and we wanted to respect it, but we’ve kept everyone else and the team will be stronger.

“[New signing Andrea] Belotti is a player we like a lot, he was our first choice, and in fact we’ve been trying everything to get him.”

Despite finishing above Milan last season and enjoying a run in the Europa League, Cairo insists the priority for the Granata is still survival.

“We have to work well on the pitch now and try to get good results. We shouldn’t feel pressure, the main thing is get to 40 points, then go from there.

“We do things step-by-step, without expecting anything.”

Serie A Week 3 - 13 Sep 2015 (11.30 UK)
Verona 2 - 2 Torino
Toni pen 49 (V), Baselli 66 (T), Gomez Taleb 72 (V), Acquah 73 (T)
Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi

Torino fought back twice at the Bentegodi and the referee infuriated both sides in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Verona.

The Granata were top of the table going in with a 100 per cent record and gave new striker Andrea Belotti his debut. Emil Hallfredsson missed out for the hosts, while Toro were without Alexander Farnerud, Nikola Maksimovic, Alessandro Gazzi, Emiliano Moretti and Gaston Silva.

Hellas hadn’t won this fixture since 1986-87, managing only one draw from seven editions at the Bentegodi.

Rafael Marquez saw two headers from set plays skim the crossbar in the opening minutes, but the visitors’ injury crisis deepened when Danilo Avelar went off with a knee problem.

Juanito Gomez Taleb only glanced another header from Federico Viviani’s free kick and Bruno Peres scuffed a snapshot into the arms of Rafael. Luca Toni had a great chance on 41 minutes, but Daniele Padelli did very well to palm the header away one-handed. Another set play caused havoc in the box, but Eros Pisano couldn’t bundle it past Padelli from close range.

Toni was furious on the stroke of half-time, as he appeared to be pulled down by Cesare Bovo, but the referee waved away strong penalty appeals.

Verona were awarded a spot-kick for far less of an obvious foul straight after the restart, as Pontus Jansson might’ve made contact with Gomez Taleb as he was losing his balance. Toni buried the penalty into the roof of the net, but it felt like the referee making up for his earlier error.

Pisano again turned a header over from one of Viviani’s set plays, but Kamil Glik did the same on a Torino corner from close range, trying to redirect Fabio Quagliarella’s misplaced effort.

The rain absolutely poured down in the second half and that made conditions difficult. Rafael realised that when he spilled a Quagliarella angled drive, allowing Daniele Baselli a simple tap-in to equalise. It was the midfielder’s third goal in as many games since joining from Atalanta, so it’s already his most prolific ever campaign.

However, it didn’t last long, as soon after Juanito Gomez Taleb managed to flick his header past Padelli from another Viviani free kick.

The skies opened and so did the floodgates, as Torino fought back to equalise within 60 seconds. Rafael only flapped at a cross and Afriyie Acquah’s effort from the edge of the box squirmed into the near bottom corner.

There was more controversy when Vangelis Moras appeared to handle in the box, but the free kick was given against Glik for a minimal push.

Giampaolo Pazzini came off the bench and blasted not far off target, then Toni had more penalty appeals for a Bovo coming together, but this time it seemed weak and he was booked.
Verona: Rafael; Pisano, Marquez, Moras, Souprayen; Sala (Ionita 84), Viviani, Greco; Siligardi (Jankovic 63), Toni, Gomez Taleb (Pazzini 84)
Torino: Padelli; Molinaro, Glik, Bovo; Peres, Obi (Acquah 50), Vives, Baselli, Avelar (Jansson 15); Quagliarella, Belotti (Maxi Lopez 58)

Serie A Week 4 - 20 Sep 2015 (14.00 UK)
Torino 2 - 0 Sampdoria
Quagliarella 17, 24 (T)
Stadio Olimpico

Fabio Quagliarella bagged a brace to keep Torino in second place with a comfortable victory over Sampdoria.

Only three rounds in, but this was a head-to-head for second place, as both sides had seven points and were still unbeaten. Aleksandar Farnerud, Nikola Maksimovic, Danilo Avelar and Alessandro Gazzi missed out for the hosts, while Samp were without Andrea Coda, Mattia Cassani and Lorenzo De Silvestri.

The Blucerchiati had won this fixture only eight times in Serie A, drawing 13 and losing the other 27.

Fabio Quagliarella broke through against one of his many former clubs, getting a powerful header to the Bruno Peres cross from the right.

Andrea Belotti drilled an effort across the face of goal and Quagliarella just had to tap into the empty net from a yard to double their advantage.

There was only one team playing. Afriyie Acquah stung Emiliano Viviano’s gloves, Quagliarella had a counter-attack blocked and Bruno Peres’ screamer skimmed the bar.

Samp did eventually emerge from their shell, Roberto Soriano volleying an Eder cross for the Daniele Padelli save.

There was a chaotic double opportunity for the Blucerchiati, as first Luis Muriel went round the goalkeeper only for his roll across to be half-cleared by Kamil Glik, then Eder came sliding in and Emiliano Moretti was decisive to stop him tapping into the empty net.

Joaquin Correa forced three tricky saves out of Daniele Padelli and Maxi Lopez almost netted a stunner for Torino, but his acrobatic volley only skimmed the crossbar.
Torino: Padelli; Bovo, Glik, Moretti; Peres (Zappacosta 76), Acquah (Benassi 84), Vives, Baselli, Molinaro; Belotti (Maxi Lopez 55), Quagliarella
Sampdoria: Viviano; Pereira, Silvestre, Moisander, Regini (Christodoulopoulos 46); Barreto, Fernando, Ivan (Correa 62); Soriano (Rodriguez 82); Eder, Muriel

Serie A Week 5 - 23 Sep 2015 (19.45 UK)
Chievo 1 - 0 Torino
Castro 75 (C)
Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi

Torino saw their unbeaten record come grinding to a halt with this defeat to impressive Chievo.

Surprisingly, this was a battle for the top spots, as Toro sat in second place with 10 points from four rounds, while the Flying Donkeys were in sixth position. Danilo Avelar, Nikola Maksimovic and Alexander Farnerud didn’t make the trip, while the hosts missed Ivan Radovanovic and Paul-Jose M’Poku.

Torino had only ever won this Serie A fixture once (0-1 in May 2014), drawing three and losing three. Home and away, Chievo had just one victory over Toro in the last 13 meetings, scraping five draws and six losses.

Albano Bizzarri had his gloves stung by a Bruno Peres solo effort, then a Bruno Peres cross-shot flashed across the face of goal with nobody able to get the decisive touch.

Perparim Hetemaj crossed for Sergio Pellissier before the break, but the header whistled wide. Daniele Padelli finally had something to do, at full stretch to palm away an Alberto Paloschi strike from the edge of the box, while Riccardo Meggiorini’s acrobatic overhead kick skimmed the bar.

Chievo were more fired up as time went on and took the lead with a Lucas Castro solo effort. He surged forward from midfield and unleashed a fierce strike from the D.
Chievo: Bizzarri; Frey, Dainelli, Cesar, Cacciatore (Gobbi 66); Pinzi, Hetemaj, Castro; Birsa (Rigoni 79); Paloschi, Pellissier (Meggiorini 55)
Torino: Padelli; Bovo, Glik, Moretti; Peres (Zappacosta 80), Benassi, Vives, Baselli, Molinaro; Martinez (Belotti 69), Quagliarella

Serie A Week 6 - 27 Sep 2015 (14.00 UK)
Torino 2 - 1 Palermo
Gonzalez og 44 (T), Benassi 48 (T), Gonzalez 71 (P)
Stadio Olimpico

Torino went down to nine men, but held on by the skin of their teeth for a 2-1 victory over unlucky Palermo.

The Granata were still in good shape despite suffering their first defeat of the campaign midweek and hosted a Palermo side that was sliding after a strong start. Bruno Peres joined Danilo Avelar, Alessandro Gazzi and Nikola Maksimovic on the touchline, while Luca Rigoni was suspended with Uros Djurdjevic, Francesco Bolzoni and Michel Morganella injured.

The last four meetings between these sides, home and away, ended in a share of the spoils, as last season there were two 2-2 draws.

Fabio Quagliarella at full stretch couldn’t quite control a Giuseppe Vives ball over the top, while Fabio Daprela’s header from an Andrea Rispoli cross skimmed the far post.

Aleksandar Trajkovski was unlucky not to celebrate a goal when his sensational free kick from 25 metres smacked against the crossbar.

Just before the break Torino took the lead with Maxi Lopez meeting a Cristian Molinaro low ball from six yards, but it was bundled in off defender Giancarlo Gonzalez, as the striker tried to get a final touch and failed.

There were no arguments over the second Toro goal, as Maxi Lopez flicked up a ball over the top and down the right side of the box Marco Benassi at full stretch hit a sensational volley across Stefano Sorrentino into the far top corner. It was a magnificent finish from the Italy Under-21 international.

Torino went down to 10 men, as Molinaro received a second yellow card for pulling back Trajkovski. That allowed Palermo back into the game and Gonzalez made up for his earlier own goal, a towering header on Franco Vazquez’s cross into the correct net for the Costa Rica international.

The Sicilians poured forward, a Robin Quaison header landing on the roof of the net, but the tension escalated and Torino ended the game with nine players.

Joel Obi lost his cool, hacking down Vazquez for a straight red card. Palermo thought they’d equalised deep into stoppages, but Struna’s header looped up to bounce off the crossbar.

Alberto Gilardino nodded inches wide too in a late siege, but nine-man Toro held on.
Torino: Padelli; Bovo, Glik, Moretti; Zappacosta, Benassi (Acquah 71), Vives, Baselli (Obi 68), Molinaro; Quagliarella, Maxi Lopez (Gaston Silva 62)
Palermo: Sorrentino; Struna, Gonzalez, El Kaoutari; Rispoli (Gilardino 51), Hiljiemark, Chochev, Daprelà (Lazaar 74); Vazquez; Trajkovski (La Gumina 82), Quaison

Baselli gunning for Milan
By Football Italia staff

Daniele Baselli has made a surprisingly quick recovery from injury and could play for Torino against Milan on Saturday.

The Italy Under-21 international midfielder was in training today with the squad and looks set to feature at the weekend.

He sprained his left knee in late September and there were originally fears of ligament damage, but it proved to only be a strain to the collateral ligament.

Baselli returned to full training today and should be ready to face Milan this Saturday.

Doubts remain over his Toro teammates Danilo Avelar and Marco Benassi, who trained separately from the others.
