Debrecni v. Cliftonville

Hi there,

I'm a Cliftonville fan who has just booked my flights to Hungary for the game on the 22nd July. Just wonder if anyone could give a few pointers/things to look out for in Debrecen. We are especially interested in the best places to drink

As for the match, we are a very good team in our own league but I have no doubt you will beat us. We are semi-professional and all our players have day jobs so only train part time. Our greatest ever result was beating a Croatian team Cibalia a few years ago - hoping for a repeat of that but don't expect it!

As for Belfast - feel free to ask any questions. Do you think many will travel?

Debrecen is a rather small town, not hard to find the best places for drinking, most of them are on or around the main square. some are in the forest/park area around the university and stadium.

How much would we expect to pay for a pint?

I am also going to travel to Budapest the next day to check it out - is it easier getting there by bus or train?

Also, what Debrecni players should we look out for?

there is no pint. more like a half liter. which would be around 500-600 HUF
(€ 1.6 - 2.0)

Szakaly is probably Debrecen's best player, but they've got no real standouts really. Just play together very well. Jozsef Varga might play - he was on loan at Middlesbrough last year. Adam Bodi can be very good. Two full backs very decent too - Korhut and Lazar.

Will the game be played at Windsor Park or at your own stadium? Tempted to go over for it.

It will be played at our own stadium, it's quite small but we got Celtic in the CL last year and there was 5,000 at it and it looked great.

Our best player Liam Boyce - and the best player in Ireland - has just left us to go to Ross County in Scotland, so I don't know who is going to replace him. I believe squad lists for the CL have to be submitted before June 30th, so there is not much time.

You really should win quite comfortably, I'm just looking forward to the trip to Hungary to experience a new country and meet new fans

I remember watching Cliftonville's home leg against Celtic, Samaras scored a peach of a goal.

Anyway, good luck Cliftonville.

I was there

Debrecen is a really nice city but it is pretty small. The best bar imo is called Play Pub House, a strange name, but friendly with lots of students usually in and they do food as well, it's close to the centre too.

The Aranybika is a good hotel bang in the middle by the main square, it's pretty cheap although a bit old-fashioned but is very handy for a walk or tram to the stadium/station/central bars/restaurants etc. There are quite a few hotels near the new stadium but they are further away from pretty much everything else.

Best way to get to/from Budapest is definitely by train and not sure how you are flying in but as well as flights to Budapest there are direct flights from Luton to Debrecen which might be useful.

Don't overestimate Hungarian football, yes Debrecen will be favourites but I don't think they are that much better and you do have a chance.

Hope you all have a good trip and Good Luck!

I remember one time Andor was booking tickets to go see a match between us and Norway. He found a ticket really cheap to Budapest. Too bad, the game was in Norway

Andor's famous quote - "It's still cheap!"

Andor

Who would have thunk years on he would travel the world with military precision!

What a legend He got all his mistakes out of the way when there was no tét What a guy

Not like me, I travelled to Budapest without a mobile (cell) phone. Máté bought me one in Hungary so when I'm there I don't get ripped off with extortionate roaming charges (I remember Sanyi's face when Tamás (Hungária called his phone in Manchester. Tamás wanted to talk to Sanyi, Áron NG and I in turn. The call was going on for time :embarass: I Saw Sanyi's face thinking 'hang the fvck up!!').

Anyway I arrived at Ferkómoutain and Máté wasn't there waiting for me as we agreed (even 2hrs before I boarded). The fuktard fell asleep!! I panicked, wasn'ts sure what to do. I looked in my bag and as luck would have it. I used the same bag last time I went to HU. There was a few 100ft coins in there. So I was able to wake him up.

Just imagine if I had no coins Now I have Hungarian money in my safe for the next time I go. Although some was going to be withdrawn so I took them to the bank to exchange.

Story over
