Eastern Conference playoffs are set

1) New York Red Bulls
2) Sporting Kansas City
3) New England Revolution
4) Houston Dynamo
5) Montreal Impact

Montreal certainly backed into the playoffs but were helped out by other results, they go to Houston for the play-in game

Still seeding to play for in the West

Western Conference now complete, with LA getting a draw at Seattle, the Sounders will host the play-in game against the Rapids.

1) Portland Timbers
2) Real Salt Lake
3) Los Angeles Galaxy
4) Seattle Sounders
5) Colorado Rapids

The MLS should publish the playoff schedule (date, times, TV stations) tomorrow

Seattle got lucky not losing vs LA. Clear goal by Omar Gonzalez disallowed. I think Colorado will give them a good game. Houston should stroll pass slumping Montreal IMO.

Off Topic:

Yeah Seattle is a boost...

http://mlsattendance.blogspot.com/ has a lot of the info for attendance...

Columbus, Colorado, Dallas, New England, Red Bulls, Portland, RSL, Seattle, KC, Vancouver all up in average attendance, but league attendance as a whole down 1% over last year.

Lots of teams at or above "Stadium Capacity" and always difficult to also correlate attendance figures with actual bums in the seat/paying bums in the seat. But good news with the relative strength of the attendance.

Back on topic:

Wow can't believe we got the 3 seed, what an awesome finish to the season for the Revs, 3 huge wins.

Montreal has that BEEP BEEP BEEP sound blaring out their stadium speakers. Can't see them beating Houston on current form, but both are pretty screwed against in form NY.

Can't see the Rapids going into the cauldron that is Seattle in a must win game and getting the result, and Dempsey actually scoring may prove a boost to him.

A Portland / Seattle matchup would be mouthwatering.

Yay playoffs.

Seattle beat Colorado 2-0 on Wednesday night, Michael Gspurning got sent off late though for handling the ball outside the area. TBH, Colorado just looked scared. They seriously couldn't string more than two passes together all night long. Pathetic and disappointing performance from them.

Tough to play in Seattle though thats quite a environment, especially in a Win or Go Home kind of situation.

Houston out to an early lead behind Bruin and Garcia...Montreal went ICE COLD and is sinking faster than the Titanic.

this match was pretty uncompetitive, changed the game when Houston scored the third goal. The attendance was very bad too

Not sure what the deal is with Houston's attendance. When they first open up their new stadium, they had great crowds. Then they had that 25 game unbeaten streak or something like that, and had great crowds throughout as well IIRC. But this year, I've seen games where crowds were really thin.

Seattle 1-2 Portland. Goals by Ryan Johnon, Darlington Nagbe, and Ozzie Alonso. Seattle had more of the ball early on and late, and they created loads of chances. In the middle of the match, I think Portland was better. Portland was more clinical as well.

Sigi made countless formation changes last nightl. Maybe formation change isn't the right term, he was definitely shuffling players around though desperately trying to find the best possible combination.

He started with

Hahnemann

Scott---Hurtado---Traore---Gonzalez

Alonso
Evans---Moffat
Dempsey

Johnson---Neagle

Seattle had zero width, and that helped lead to Portland's first goal, letting Jewsbury go up the right flank and deliver a cross to Johnson.

First sub was Mauro Rosales for Scott. Evans went back to right back, Negle went to right mid, Dempsey went up top, and Rosales in the middle.

Hahnemann

Evans---Hurtado---Traore---Gonzalez

Alonso
Neagle-------------------------Moffat
Rosales

Johnson---Dempsey

That didn't work well, cause Portland scored about 3 or 4 minutes later. So then Sigi brought on Shalrie Joseph (?) for Moffat. This again changed things up. Joseph went central, Neagle went wide left, and Rosales wide right.

Hahnemann

Evans---Hurtado---Traore---Gonzalez

Rosales---Alonso---Joseph---Neagle

Johnson---Dempsey

Then finally Burch came on for Gonzalez, a straight swap at left back, though Burch is clearly the more offensive of the two.

Seattle went from a narrow RSL style 4-4-2 diamond, to a wide 4-4-2 diamond, to a classic 4-4-2 in the end.

Seattle's problem have started (and it's not a coincidence) since Dempsey came in. 5 wins, 1 draws, and 5 losses with Clint (10 wins, 6 draws, 7 losses without Clint).

Record with Dempsey:
Starter - 3 wins, 1 draw, 4 losses
Substitute - 2 wins, 0 draws, 1 loss
Total - 5 wins, 1 draws, 5 losses
---------------------------------------------
Without - 10 wins, 6 draws, 7 losses

4 losses with Dempsey in the starting lineup :eekani: I'm not completely blaming Dempsey, but his introduction has thrown off everything Seattle was building up all year. He's not a #10, he's not a winger, he's not a striker. He's a bit like Federico Higuain for Columbus that way, but the team has been built around Higuain with the sole intent of making him 'the man'. Dempsey has just been plugged in, and it hasn't worked IMO. He has 1 goal and 0 assists I believe. Obafimi Martins hasn't really worked out either tbf, and the defense isn't really that great.

I think Seattle is out tbh, Portland won't lose at home. Seattle will have to choose between Sigi and Deuce, and we all know who will win that battle. I could see Seattle trying to bring in someone like Bob Bradley maybe. Big name coach with championship experience.

In the East, New England beat SKC 2-1 at Gillette Stadium (decent crowd for NE btw). Vermees with a strange lineup IMO. Teal Bunbury hasn't been any good since he scored a goal for the US against South Africa, and that was literally three years ago :eekani: (Nov 2010). And CJ Sapong isn't a winger, period. Why Vermees continues to play him wide baffles me. Players like Soony Saad and Dom Dywer were on the bench, and I would have easily started both of them instead of Bunbury and Sapong. And Claudio Bieler didn't even make the trip. I know he's had some injuries and form issues, but that is just plain weird to me.

As far as NE goes, I thought Fagundez was nervous, he didn't impact the match at all. Goncalves, Nguyen, and Rowe were all solid. I think Doorman and Farrell were god as well.

It was a chippy match, lots of fouls both on and off the ball. I said in the previous post that I think Portland can hold onto their 2-1 lead at home, not sure if NE can though on the road. It's always hard to tell how first time playoff teams (and coaches like Heaps) will do, but SKC are notorious playoff chokers (Sounders of the East ). I have a gut feeling SKC will pull out a win and eliminate NE, but I really really really want NE to advance. They are a far better team to watch.

Had away goals counted I think both these ties are over but with them not counting you never know. I still expect Portland and Kansas City to advance
