MLS Playoff Chase

Eastern Conference...Teams have between 3-5 games remaining (Montreal 5, CBus 3)

NYRB: 52 in 31 (NE, @HOU, CHI)
SKC: 48 in 30 (@CBUS, @HOU, DC, @PHI)
MTL: 46 in 29 (@HOU, NE, @LA, PHI, @TFC)
HOU: 44 in 30 (MTL, SKC, NYRB, @DC)
PHI: 42 in 30 (TFC, @DC, @MTL, SKC)
______________________
CBUS: 41 in 31 (SKC, @NE, NE)
NE: 41 in 30 (@NYRB, @MTL, CBUS, @CBUS)
CHI: 40 in 30 (@DC, @FCD, TFC, @NYRB)

Points to clinch playoff spot currently is 54 (any point by RBNY would make that 53).

Remaining Strength of Schedule (PPG averages of teams remaining):
NE: 1.48
CBUS: 1.45
NY: 1.39
HOU: 1.34
MTL: 1.32
SKC: 1.17
PHI: 1.13
CHI: 1.09

Looking at the Table and the Remaining Games I would guess Philly Leap Frogs Houston for the 4th seed, with Chicago just falling short of passing Houston for the 5th seed but its going to be darn close (if NY puts out a crappy team in the final game if they have locked up the 1 seed, then Chicago has a real chance of sneaking in).

I think Columbus and NE steal points off each other with the final two games leaving them both on the outside looking in.

Can't believe despite their amazing start that Montreal are in danger of missing the playoffs, really shouldn't have fell apart like this

@Hajduk - On Montreal: Yeah their fall is pretty crazy considering their schedule they had coming in. They couldn't pick up points against Houston or New England which really is shocking. They still have a game in hand over everyone else in that 3-7 cluster, so they should still be able to sneak in, but that game against Philly could be a make or break kinda game for them which was pretty much inconceivable a couple weeks ago.

To update the situation:

NYRB: 53 in 32 (@HOU, CHI)
SKC: 52 in 32 (DC, @PHI)
HOU: 46 in 32 (NYRB, @DC)
MTL: 46 in 31 (@LA, PHI, @TFC)
CHI: 46 in 32 (TFC, @NYRB)
______________________
PHI: 46 in 32 (@MTL, SKC)
NE: 45 in 32 (CBUS, @CBUS)
CBUS: 41 in 32 (@NE, NE)

So realistically 5 teams for 3 spots with 2 games to go except for Montreal's 3.

*Columbus and New England have a home and home, so they will steal points from each other unless its a clean sweep.
*The Union are in the 6 spots because Wins is the first tie-breaker, not getting 6 points against TFC and DC hurt them.

Game in hand night for Montreal, can they turn their shit form into some kind of points? 1 point out of their last 15 possible points stretching back to their Early September win over New England.

Big game in hand game as well for the LA Galaticos. Both teams REALLLYYYY need something from this game.

Aww sorry buddy, don't lose hope yet there's still a chance

Montreal losing again last night makes 3 spots totally wide open for 6 possible teams.

Only way for Cbus to even have a chance is to beat NE twice Don't see that happening. And even if we do though, none of the other teams can get more than two points. Some teams are playing DC and Toronto, so I'm pretty much done with this season.

NYRB clinch a first round bye after Montreal's loss last night

Very open playoff picture in the East while in the West pretty much the teams are known (except for the final wild card spot) just seeding to be determined

Could Seattle actually fall out of the playoffs? They play LA at home the final match. LA will probably play reserves, but that included players like Zardes and Villarreal SJ has to win out in that case, so I doubt it. SJ is second hottest team in the league though since firing Yallop. Crazy season...

Red Bulls win 3:0 in Houston and now control their destiny for the top seed in the east. Los Angeles control the destiny for the Supporter's Shield but they will likely have to win both their remaining matches

Galaxy held to a scoreless draw at home to San Jose, meaning NYRB control their destiny for the SS, a win over Chicago at home is all they need

LA clinch a playoff spot while I guess San Jose is out due to tiebreakers (MLS' website says they are out, but they are three points back with a game to play but with a poor GD)

First tie breaker is wins, then second is goals scored (stupid MLS). SJ can catch Seattle on points, but not wins. SJ is out pretty much. They have to win their last game by 12 and Colorado has to lose by 6. Five west playoff teams are Portland, RSL, LA, Seattle, and Colorado. East is still up in the air. RBNY and SKC are through, then three off Chicago, Montreal, Houston, NE, and Philly. Currently Montreal, Chicago, and NE are in.

Yeah the tie breakers in MLS are baffling to an extent. But yeah the East is wide open...

Supporters Shield
NYRB: 56
SKC: 55
POR: 54
RSL: 53

NY Clinches with win over Fire, SKC clinches with win over Philly and NY not winning, Portland clinches with win and NY losing and SKC not winning, RSL clinches with win and everyone else losing while still holding onto goal scored advantage.

EAST:
NYRB: 56 (16W - 53GF)
SKC: 55 (16W - 45GF)
MTL: 49 (14W - 50GF)
CHI: 49 (14W - 45GF)
NE: 48 (13W - 48GF)
-------
HOU: 48 (13W - 39GF)
PHI: 46 (12W - 41GF)

The two teams on the outside have a mountain to climb in terms of tie breakers so they really need to win and get help, Philly realistically only gets in with a win and a NE and HOU loss (unless they go off for 12 goals or something).

Houston gets in with a win and two teams not winning from NE/MTL/CHI. A draw and a NE Loss and Philly draw or loss gets them in as well.

NE can get the 3rd seed with a win and MTL/CHI not winning.

So realistically you could have any of the 5 teams battling for the final auto advance spot. Going to be a crayyyyy weekend.

:'( no more Sene for the year though.

unless a disaster happens in the final 20 minutes, NYRB will win the Supporters Shield while New England and Montreal get into the playoffs...Chicago out.
