HOUSTON BOUNCE BACK

Despite a shaky start, two goals from Cam Weaver were enough to see off Panamanian side Arabe Unido 2-1 in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night. It was not a pleasant affair, with a questionable penalty awarded to the visitors in the first half and seven yellow cards in the second. After the match, Dynamo head coach Dom Kinnear didn’t mince his word: “The team that had more respect for the game won the game.”

SPORTING KC ROLL ON THE ROAD

Two wins out of two and with both their remaining games to be played at Sporting Park? Things are looking good for Sporting Kansas City. A brace from Soony Saad led SKC to a 2-0 win over Honduran side CD Olimpia in the CCL. While there’s still work to be done, SKC manager Peter Vermes acknowledges “we’re in a good place.”

SAN JOSE'S LOFTY SHINY CCL OBJECTIVE

While the Earthquakes are by no means out of the MLS playoff race, the focus now shifts to a potential run in Champions League. Interim coach Mark Watson seems ready to give it a go when the team returns to action Wednesday night against Heredia in Guatemala: “We’re definitely trying to get hardware in the CCL”

How popular is the CCL? At least here in Australia for example the Asian CL has struggled to gain popularity for the most part. For the average fan, watching Aussie teams playing Japanese, Korean, Chinese etc etc teams isn't something that gets the pulse racing. I think it's largely because fans don't know anything about the opponents and we don't have any history against these teams, we haven't had any time to develop connections and rivalries and such.

Not very. Locally in Los Angeles attendance is always an issue as these midweek games against Central Americans clubs. I watched last night's game in Spanish, as these games aren't on the usual channel's broadcast.

That said, I love it. I might enjoy it more than regular season play in MLS. US vs Mexico games, even at club level, are always fun to watch. Many fans like to use these games as a measuring stick to how US soccer is advancing. But as far as I know, there isn't any real money in this for the clubs and therefore, isn't any real motivation. Many clubs field B teams until the elimination stages.

The problem is the scheduling, the group stage was played in the 2013 MLS season while the knockout stage is played in the start of the 2014 season, which doesn't help the MLS clubs (not an excuse though, for the most part the Mexican teams are better). Its popular in certain markets, I know here when Red Bulls will play in it there won't be much interest unless they make a big run. Also the games aren't accessible on English speaking television, pretty much only the Spanish channels show it. MLS though is so desperate for one of their clubs to win it, because they desperately want a team in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Anyway, Tijuana was much better than LA in both legs, the fact it was 4:3 on aggregate doesn't show that though

Toluca and San Jose heading to penalty kicks, both legs ended 1:1, Toluca hit the post in the 119th minute but San Jose in general have defended well

San Jose lose 5:4 on penalty kicks, good effort from them but now it looks very likely no MLS teams in the semis with KC losing 2:0 at Cruz Azul

All MLS sides are out after the quarters, with Kansas City getting smoked by Cruz Azul. All MLS media is now blaming the schedule, and yes they are partly correct but will it really make that big of a difference if they moved these games 2-3 weeks?

Next season it might be worse with DC United in the tournament and NY Red Bulls probably not taking it too seriously (though under Petke that attitude might change, but in previous regimes the focus was solely on MLS)

San Jose filed a complaint to CONCACAF as Toluca filmed San Jose's entire training session at their stadium. I doubt they will overturn the result though
