Major League Soccer Allocation Process

The allocation ranking is the mechanism used to determine which MLS club has first priority to acquire a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the League after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee. The allocation rankings may also be used in the event two or more clubs file a request for the same player on the same day when the discovery period opens in December. The allocations will be ranked in reverse order of finish for the 2011 season, taking playoff performance into account.

Once the club uses its allocation ranking to acquire a player, it drops to the bottom of the list. A ranking can be traded, provided that part of the compensation received in return is the other club’s ranking. At all times, each club is assigned one ranking. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS League season.

US goalkeeper Robles signs MLS deal, awaits destination

MLS teams in need of a quick fix at goalkeeper may have a solution within reach.

American netminder Luis Robles, who spent five seasons in the German second division, has signed an MLS contract and will be available to teams through the allocation process. If he goes unselected in the allocation process, he'll go on waivers.

Since Robles was once on D.C. United's "College Protected List," his return to MLS requires him to go through the allocation rankings, where the New England Revolution hold the first choice.

RBNY Notebook: Robles joins amid concerns about Meara

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The move by the New York Red Bulls to acquire goalkeeper Luis Robles in the allocation process earlier this week left many fans confused and some believed that the club would dispose of one of the three net minders already on the roster to make way for Robles.

It turns out that is not the case, at least for now.

First in line, Revolution are fielding inquiries for Toja

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England general manager Michael Burns said he has fielded several calls from other teams interested in acquiring attacking midfielder Juan Toja, who signed a deal with the league on Thursday.

Toja, 27, will learn his new MLS club on Monday after he goes through the MLS allocation process. New England currently hold the top spot in the allocation order and will not pass on the opportunity to select Toja, but Burns said the Revolution will listen to offers for the spot before deciding whether to keep the two-time MLS All-Star or trade him to another club.

“We're extremely serious about acquiring him,” Burns told MLSsoccer.com on Friday morning. “We have until Monday to make a decision. Between the announcement last night and today, we've already received some interest, as we thought we would. We'll listen to offers and then we'll make a decision on Monday whether we want to accept any of those offers or select the player. That's really what it comes down to.”

Hahnemann returns to MLS, club to be determined

Hahnemann first landed at Fulham, then also played at Rochdale and Reading on loan before joining Reading permanently in 2002. He famously helped the Royals gain promotion to the Premier League for the 2006-07 season alongside fellow US international Bobby Convey. He later joined Wolverhampton Wanderers and then most recently Everton, where he played understudy to Tim Howard but never made a first-team appearance.

He has been without a club since May when he was released by Everton.

Hahnemann has nine caps for the US national team and was part of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup squads.

Toronto FC currently sit atop the allocation order and will have the first option to acquire the 40-year-old. The full allocation rankings are as follows:

Updated Allocation Order (as of Friday, Sept. 14, 2012)

1) Toronto FC (33 pts in 2011)

4) D.C. United (39 pts in 2011)

Hahnemann returns to MLS, lands with hometown Seattle

Seattle acquired the two-time World Cup veteran – who signed a contract with Major League Soccer on Friday and returned to the league via the allocation process – by obtaining Toronto FC's spot atop the allocation rankings in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Hahnemann had been without a club since his release from Everton FC in May.
