Twenty-Four Under 24

MLSsoccer.com's "24 Under 24" returns Sept. 12

One of MLSsoccer.com’s most popular series is back and better than ever. Just in time for the stretch run to the MLS Cup playoffs.

Beginning on Monday, Sept. 12, MLSsoccer.com will bring you our second annual 24 Under 24 — the ultimate countdown of the 24 best MLS players under the age of 24. Who will succeed Seattle’s Fredy Montero at the top of the list?

Mark your calendars: The 24 Under 24 fan vote kicks off Sept. 5 with the final countdown to No. 1 beginning in earnest on Sept. 12.

Last year's top three in the rankings earned a DP contract, a US national team call-up and MLS Rookie of the Year honors, respectively. Who's next?

24 Under 24: Fans can now vote on their top 24 young stars

Facebook ballot allows supporters to have their say on the rankings

It’s time for the fans to make their voices heard.

Supporters around the league can now vote for their own 24 Under 24 – the top 24 players under the age of 24 – via a Facebook ballot that launched on Labor Day Monday which features a list of 50 players as determined by the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff. Write-in candidates can also be submitted for players that fit the age criteria. Cast your vote today (http://www.facebook.com/MLS?sk=app_146882108705391).

Fans can then compare their vote to that of the experts when the countdown to the No. 1 young player starts in earnest on Monday, Sept. 12.

MLSsoccer.com assembled a panel of the most respected MLS observers in the nation, who helped determine the final 2011 rankings for the 24 Under 24: Jeff Carlisle (ESPN.com), Marc Connolly (ESPN), Steve Davis (SI.com), Brian Dunseth (Fox Soccer), Allen Hopkins (Fox Soccer), Alexi Lalas (ESPN), Kyle Martino (Fox Soccer), Taylor Twellman (ESPN) and Grant Wahl (Sports Illustrated).

24 Under 24:
Fan voting begins Monday for the 2012 edition

The third annual MLSsoccer.com 24 Under 24 — the ultimate ranking of the top young players in MLS — will return on September 10, with the #1 player being revealed on Friday, September 21. This year, we're letting you have your say in who that #1 player should be.

Beginning Monday, August 20, fans will have five days to complete the ballot, helping MLSsoccer.com to select the top players under 24 from clubs around MLS. Those votes will count for 10 percent of a player's ranking with the other 90 percent determined by the submissions of an expert media panel, including the editorial staff of MLSsoccer.com.

Five who should have made #24Under24

Ok, now you’ve seen the full 24 Under 24 list. And if you’re a Whitecaps fan, you probably like it. If you’re a Sporting KC fan, you’re cool with it. D.C. United? Probably OK

24 Under 24:
One month away from revealing 2014 list of MLS' most promising youngsters

Darren Mattocks finished top in 2012, Brek Shea was 2011's best and Fredy Montero started the series out with a bang.

One month from today, the countdown to crown MLSsoccer.com's top 24 Under 24 for 2013 will begin with MLS standouts such as Darlington Nagbe, Jack McInerney, DeAndre Yedlin, Luis Gil and Diego Fagundez among the talented group of players vying for the honor.

Players who are 23 years old and younger as of the final matchday of the 2013 regular season were eligible for inclusion. Votes were collected from the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff and various American soccer media members.

MLSsoccer.com staff and media panelists rated players based on the following five criteria:
•Technical (skills, dribbling, shooting, first touch, heading, etc.)
•Tactical (positioning, reading game, soccer IQ, etc.)
•Physical Attributes (speed, endurance, strength, vertical leap, etc.)
•Personality (marketability, media savvy, quotability, charisma, intangibles, etc.)
•Potential (upside, national team potential, potential future transfer value, etc.)

#24 Jonathan Osorio, Toronto FC

Pos: M | Toronto FC | Age: 21

The Ontario native made his way onto the list after enjoying as good a start to his rookie campaign as could have been imagined. Osorio's received steady minutes for a Toronto FC team in rebuilding mode and demonstrated his propensity for timely goals, including a wonderful strike against the New York Red Bulls back in April. The 21-year-old midfielder is blessed with technical abilities that outstrip his experience and with five goals in 2013 he has looked mature beyond his years, making an impact as both a substitute and starter. One of the few positives the team can boast this season, his future in Toronto looks extremely bright.

#23 Dillon Powers, Colorado Rapids

Pos: M | Colorado Rapids | Age: 22

Asked to step into a key role from day one because of an injury to playmaking midfielder Martin Rivero, the Rapids rookie has exceeded expectations in his first year on the job. The Notre Dame product made his way onto this list by playing outside his comfort zone (and excelling) as an attacking midfielder, while also sliding back to man the holding mid role he played in college. Powers, the former US U-18 and U-20 international, hasn't had difficulty adapting to either position, scoring four goals and dishing out five assists in 27 starts. “Every game is teaching him something else and the best part with Dillon is he’s like a sponge,” Rapids coach Oscar Pareja said earlier this season. “He’s growing and he understands it’s not quite there yet and he needs to keep improving, and that’s encouraging for the coach.”
