New England Revolution

Revs offer new contract to Reis, opt out on four

The New England Revolution have extended a contract offer to veteran goalkeeper Matt Reis in an attempt to keep their veteran No. 1 in the fold for 2011.

Reis, 35, entered the offseason as the Revolution's lone out-of-contract player after he concluded his eighth season with the team in 2010.

Revolution vice president of player personnel Michael Burns confirmed on Thursday that the team has supplied Reis with a new offer, but he did not elaborate on the length or the terms of the proposed deal.

If New England handed Reis a bona-fide offer – including a five-percent raise on his 2010 base salary for next season, among other protections and provisions – under the terms of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, it would explain why Reis is not included among the list of possible candidates for the first stage of the Re-Entry process on Wednesday.

While New England have taken steps to retain Reis for 2011, they have also moved to possibly cut ties with four members of their current squad. Preston Burpo, Nico Colaluca, Cory Gibbs and Khano Smith will enter Wednesday's first stage of the Re-Entry process after the Revolution decided not to exercise their option to keep each of the four players for next season at their option price.

“The re-entry process is new this year, not only for the players, but also the teams,” Burns said in a statement on Friday afternoon. “With the new labor agreement, we had to make some difficult personnel and salary cap decisions.”

Domi finds himself at home in New England

French left back hopes to help Revs back to playoffs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One week in Boston inspired Didier Domi to make the move from Europe to the United States.

Domi spent a brief period on trial with the New England Revolution in September as he and the Revs assessed whether a potential transfer made sense for both parties.

After getting a feel for the club and the city, Domi decided it did. The Revs agreed.

“You have to see if you feel good first with the team, the trainer and the town,” Domi told MLSsoccer.com earlier this week. “When I saw the atmosphere, it was good. There were a lot of youngsters and Steve [Nicol, Revolution coach] is very nice. That is the best part – to come here when you have the relationships.”

Those nascent bonds encouraged the former Newcastle, Olympiakos and Paris Saint-Germain defender to hold off on making a more lucrative move within Europe until the Revolution could claim him in the MLS discovery process and negotiate a deal for his services.

A French report this morning claims that midfielder Ousmane Dabo will be joining fellow Frenchman Didier Domi and sign with the New England Revolution. The article says he is soon to undergo a medical. (FRENCH)

The Revs are also being linked with South African forward Benni McCarthy, who is on the outs at EPL side West Ham.

Another forward based overseas looking to latch on with an MLS club is Charlie Davies. His week-long trial continues today as D.C. United faces both Canada’s Under-20s and Florida International University in preseason exhibitions.

There is also a match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center at 5 p.m. ET. Five trialists are looking to make the squad for the Quakes.

New England claim US international Feilhaber

MF falls to Revs after Chivas, Philly pass;
NE have no comment

The New England Revolution have claimed US national-teamer Benny Feilhaber, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday night.

The World Cup veteran fell to the Revs after Chivas USA and Philadelphia both declined their options to claim him per the league's allocation order for incoming US internationals.

New England now must decide whether to keep Feilhaber or trade him. The club declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday night.

A UCLA product, Feilhaber signed with MLS last Friday after spending three seasons with Danish Superliga side AGF Aarhus. Per the league’s allocation order, Chivas USA had the first option to acquire the midfielder.

However, the player’s salary was the prime concern for the Goats, who will keep the top spot in the allocation order. Philadelphia retain the No. 2 spot.

Shit show offensively since Perovic went down. Lekic is frustrated with the physicality. Noone reads and understands what Benny is trying to do other than Joseph and Lekic. When they finally score goals they refuse to maintain possession to kill the game. Frustrating season indeed. Shame I'll miss the united dog and pony show next week.

New England add Argentine striker Caraglio as first-ever DP
22-year-old forward joins Revs from Argentine club Rosario Central

The New England Revolution have added their first-ever Designated Player — and, they hope, some much-needed scoring punch — in the form of Argentine striker Milton Caraglio.

Caraglio, 22, will move to MLS from Argentine side Rosario Central, pending the outcome of an entrance physical on Wednesday. Caraglio is expected to practice with the Revs for the first time on Thursday and will take up a roster spot and an international player slot upon the arrival of his international transfer certificate.

“We've been pretty open and public about our desire to add a player or two during this window,” vice president of player personnel Michael Burns told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday afternoon. “We're looking forward to getting Milton in as quickly as possible and getting acclimated to our guys, both on and off the field.”

Caraglio first popped up on the Revolution's radar earlier this year. After sorting through his record with Rosario (11 goals in 49 games in the Argentine first division from 2007-2010) and weighing the desire to sign more attacking players during the transfer window, the Revs decided to move for a player heavily linked to Catania (Italy) and West Ham United (England) last summer

Revs add Jerry Bengtson

Honduran international, La Liga Nacional’s three-time leading scorer joins Revs on transfer

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has acquired Honduran forward Jerry Bengtson on a transfer from Honduras’ CD Motagua. Bengtson, who recently led La Liga Nacional de Honduras in scoring for three straight seasons, will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his U.S. P-1 Visa and his International Transfer Certificate. He will occupy both designated player and international roster spots on the Revolution’s roster once added. Per league and club policies, further contract details will not be released.

“We’re very pleased that we’ve added Jerry to our squad,” Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said. “He is very well-known within CONCACAF and has been a reliable, consistent scorer for both club and country. We’re looking forward to getting him integrated into our system as quickly as possible and to getting him out on the field in MLS games.”

Recap: Nguyen, debutant Bengtson power Revs past RBNY

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Forget about those last-minute New England heroics this week. They simply weren't necessary as the Revs dispatched the New York Red Bulls, 2-0, at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Lee Nguyen capped a fine Revolution start by firing home from outside the penalty area to open the scoring after 24 minutes. New York striker Kenny Cooper hit the post after 56 minutes as the Red Bulls improved after the break, but Revolution debutant Jerry Bengtson concluded a good night for the home side with his first MLS goal six minutes from time to ice the win.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution has acquired French striker Dimitry Imbongo on a free transfer after coming up through TSV 1860 Munich’s system. News of Joseph trade
hits stunned Revolution players hard

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The news of Shalrie Joseph's departure almost seemed too significant and too surprising for his teammates to process on Wednesday morning.

Joseph no longer a Rev? On his way to Chivas USA in a trade?

Even in the volatile world of MLS, the move represents a dramatic shift for a club that has leaned on Joseph for the past decade to lead the team on the field and in the locker room.

“It still hasn't quite sunk in,” Revolution goalkeeper and longtime teammate Matt Reis told MLSsoccer.com. “It's been an interesting morning. There have been some seismic events, even though we don't get too many earthquakes around here.”

Losing the imposing and pervasive presence of their captain certainly qualifies as a dramatic shock. Joseph, 34, wielded plenty of influence within the squad and his absence will create a significant void to fill in several different areas.

Can't believe this, pretty surprising.

What do you think, EPJr?

Gavin still coming to grips with "shock" trade to Revs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Blair Gavin took a few minutes at the conclusion of his first training session as a member of the New England Revolution to sit on the Gillette Stadium turf.

He likely needed the rest.

Gavin is right in the middle of a whirlwind week that involved a trade from Chivas USA on Wednesday, a furious rush to pack up his belongings for a quick move across the continent and a long flight to link up with his new teammates ahead of Saturday's match against Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET, watch LIVE online).

“Obviously, it's been a shock,” Gavin told MLSsoccer.com on Friday morning. “Once you actually hear the words 'you've been traded,' it doesn't do it justice until you get here and you're like, 'Wow, I'm at New England right now.' It's going to take an adjustment period, but I'm excited to be here and I'm glad to be wearing the crest of New England.”

Joseph’s homecoming provides subplot vs. Chivas USA

Former Revolution captain to make his return to Foxborough

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Just as he’s done countless times, Shalrie Joseph will trot onto the Gillette Stadium field on Wednesday night wearing red, white and blue.

But instead of sporting the New England Revolution’s home colors – as he did for 10 years – this time Joseph will be representing the visitors as he returns to Foxborough for the first time since the Aug. 1 trade which sent him across the country to Chivas USA.

It’s sure to be a bizarre experience for Joseph, who came to call New England home during his decorated decade-long stint with the Revs, but it’s also a unique opportunity for the 34-year-old to perform in front of the loyal Revolution fans and against his former teammates.

Revs blow 3-goal lead as Shalrie leads Goats to 3-3 draw

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Shalrie Joseph marked his return to Gillette Stadium by spurring a three-goal comeback to lift Chivas USA to a 3-3 draw with New England on Wednesday night.

Saër Sène scored twice either side of a Rauwshan McKenzie own goal to stake the Revs to a seemingly comfortable three-goal lead inside the first 21 minutes. Joseph tallied twice before halftime to cut deeply into that advantage before Miller Bolaños completed the recovery two minutes after the interval by bundling home Casey Townsend's knockdown at the far post.

New England appeared to place the outcome of the match beyond doubt by taking advantage of Chivas USA's defensive instability to score three times inside the first 21 minutes.

Revolution hold No. 1 SuperDraft pick after deal with Toronto

There's a player out there that the New England Revolution want real bad.

The Revs on Wednesday sent the No. 4 overall pick and allocation money to Toronto FC in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's SuperDraft (12 pm ET on MLSsoccer.com, ESPN3.com and YouTube).

The Revolution have never had a No. 1 pick in MLS history. Their highest-ever pick came in 2002 when they took the club's all-time leading scorer, Taylor Twellman, at No. 2.

Toronto FC will hold the No. 3 and No. 4 spots on Thursday.

Rochester Rhinos will serve as affiliate
to New England Revolution

After months of negotiations and speculation, Major League Soccer and the United Soccer Leagues announced a multi-year affiliation agreement Wednesday that partners USL PRO teams, including the Rochester Rhinos, for the upcoming season with MLS clubs.

Team president Pat Ercoli said the Rhinos will be paired in 2013 with the New England Revolution, who are based in Foxborough, Mass., and will carry at least four Revs players on loan on their roster. The MLS-USL agreement also includes home-and-home series between USL squads and the reserve squad of MLS teams, which are usually younger, developmental players.
