FC Dallas' Hyndman wins 2010 Coach of the Year

NEW YORK — There were plenty of doubters back in 2008, when FC Dallas hired Schellas Hyndman as coach. Despite his success as coach at Southern Methodist, many observers questioned whether Hyndman could make the leap up to the pro game.

Two years later, those questions have been answered.

On Thursday, MLS announced Hyndman as the 2010 Coach of the Year following an astounding season that saw FCD rip off a 19-game unbeaten streak and earn their first postseason berth since 2007.

Hyndman, who coached SMU for 24 years and led the Mustangs to the College Cup three times, took over the reins at FC Dallas in June 2008, after the club sacked Steve Morrow.

At the time, FCD were 4-5-4, underperforming despite plenty of talent and reportedly struggling with a divided locker room. Under Hyndman that first year, they finished the season 8-10-12, in fifth place in the Western Conference.

But he was still building the side in the style he wanted—one that encouraged attacking from the flanks and rugged defending in the center of the back line.

FC Dallas signs Brazilian midfielder Ricardo Villar

Penn State product joins FCD from German side SpVgg Unterhaching

FRISCO, Texas (Feb. 7, 2011) – FC Dallas added depth to its midfield with the signing of Brazilian midfielder Ricardo Villar, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, the club announced today. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

WATCH: Ricardo Villar introduces himself to FC Dallas fans (http://www.twitvid.com/VNVYR)

“We’re very happy to have Ricardo be part of FC Dallas,” said head coach Schellas Hyndman. “He’s a player that comes in with great experience, having played in Germany and also in Austria. He can help us in our attack. He’s got good technical ability, great vision and a very good soccer brain. With the pressures of trying to be the same attacking-minded and explosive type team that we’ve been in the past, we know that a lot of pressure will be on David (Ferreira). Not only is David a good player, but now he’s MVP and I think Villar coming in will be able to take some of that pressure off David.”

FC Dallas beat Euro powers to Colombia U-20 star

Addition of Castillo may lead to change in tactics for Hyndman

After months of scouting and traveling in search of the right striker, FC Dallas have found their guy in 18-year-old Fabián Castillo of Colombian side Deportivo Cali.

A member of the Colombian Under-20 national team, Castillo is judged by many to be one of the top prospects in his country. FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman has equally high hopes of what his new signing can accomplish in MLS.

Yeah, I do. Definetly going to catch that game as well as some of the next few MLS matches, haven't seen much lately tbh.

I just saw FC Dallas rape Portland 4-0 this morning. Very impressive, and this is without David Ferreira :eekani:

This morning? On a replay or something?

Cause that game was last week. Hoping they finish the Crew tomorrow at PHP.

What team do you support/prefer in MLS?

Yeah, I downloaded a torrent. I've been watching a lot of Zach Loyd recently. I'd like to see him get a call up to the national team.

Well, ironically enough, I live in Ohio and the closest team to me is Columbus, but I don't support them. The only teams I support are Valencia Club de Fútbol and the United States.

I enjoy watching MLS in general though. The quality of the league is improving every year IMO.

Yeah, it is improving but it's not as good as some of these dumb American commentators make it out to be. I fell asleep watching a game last week before the Gold Cup final started.

Agreed. I always laugh whenever they refer to someone as "world class" :dielaugh: No one in MLS is world class.

During the Dallas v Portland match, the commentator said their goalkeeper, Troy Perkins, was 'better than that' or 'good' or something like that. Perkins is shit. He's actually from the same city/town as me, so I do follow him a little bit. He's garbage.

They have to try and sell the product though, so I understand. Saying someone is good is better than saying they suck...

Loco4LosChe, I'm kinda like you

Athletic Bilbao fan mainly, but US National team is always my favorite team. Because of that, I religiously watch MLS, following all of the teams and watching my favorite players because I don't live in an MLS market. Dallas this season is definitely an exciting team to follow right now, even without Fereira.

Sometimes I get annoyed at the crappy quality of some of the worse teams in the league. The problem (but also a key part in its stability) with MLS is the salary cap, because you have a lot of quality players, but the rest are just technically not good enough. I don't like comparing leagues, but sometimes I watch an MLS game and feel like it was something out of the English League two, other times I see lower Premiership/high Championship-like performances.

Another thing I hate is that the players don't know how to deal with pressure. Someone pressures them a little, and they kick the ball away. The fullbacks are the worse offenders in this. Still, I'm American, so I'll watch it and support it.

2-0 over the Columbus Crew last night. Shea scored again.

A point behind the Galaxy with a game in hand.

Away to RSL tonight. Tough game, hoping we can make the most of some decent opportunities.

Hoping LA slip up at home tonight as well, just so we can go top of the overall table.

Just realized we face RSL on Tuesday in the USOC as well. Hopefully we come out on top in both.
