Man United handed first loss on U.S. tour

In the aftermath of the Kansas City Wizards' 2-1 win over mighty Manchester United, Coach Peter Vermes tried to be humble. Central defender Jimmy Conrad did not.

''MLS owns the city of Manchester right now,'' crowed Conrad, who was sent off in the 39th minute.

A crowd of 52,342 — largest ever to see a soccer match in Kansas City — watched Davy Arnaud and Kei Kamara score first-half goals, then saw the Wizards fend off repeated shots on goal in the second half as the MLS team handed the Red Devils their first loss in a four-city tour of the United States.

THE REBRANDING OF THE WIZARDS

Kansas City franchise announced on Wednesday their new identity, including a new name, new crest, new colors, and a totally new look to go along with the new stadium that will open in 2011:

The Kansas City Wizards are now Sporting Kansas City.

Check out the new website: www.SportingKC.com

“We acquired our team from the greatest entrepreneur in the history of American sports,” Sporting President Robb Heineman said in a statement released by the club, referring to previous owner Lamar Hunt. “Moving forward, the vision of our brand is to continuously innovate and provide high-performance experiences for our members.”

More than 1,000 supporters attended the official unveiling in Kansas City. And Sporting's recently signed designated player, Mexican striker Omar Bravo, was also on handing, making his first appearance in town since signing.

“Our mission is to connect Kansas City to the premier professional sports experiences in the Midwest,” Heineman said. “We look forward to sharing more exciting news about future events and to hosting all our great fans in our new home upon its opening in June.”

The club's new crest has several elements, including boasting the upside-down teardrop shape of the original Wiz shield. The 11 stripes represent the 11 players on a field, and the right edge of the lines forms the angled shape of the Missouri-Kansas stateline. The crest's designers took inspiration from Greek mythology and art, including the rod of the Greek god Asclepius and the statue Winged Victory, and from Spanish architecture, a major part of Kansas City's Country Club Plaza district.

Heineman on KC's stadium and potential DP

Q&A with Sporting KC's ambitious, and busy, president

Sporting KC president Robb Heineman doesn’t profess to be a patient man.

He is, however, an ambitious one. With Sporting Kansas City’s new stadium steadily rising in Kansas City, Kan., and the club enthusiastically preparing for what promises to be a crucial season, Heineman has his hands full.

MLSsoccer.com’s Andrew Wiebe caught up with Heineman to discuss the team’s efforts in the player market, the current squad, progress on the business side of things and the feverish construction being undertaken on it’s new stadium.

First preseason phase begins for Kansas City

Tests, light training await players prior to traveling to Arizona

ANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sporting Kansas City’s contracted players, draft picks and selected trialists reported on Monday for the beginning of the preseason, officially marking the start of preparations for the 2011 campaign.

Sporting’s players will spend this week undergoing various fitness tests, taking physicals and partaking in light training at the Kansas City Chiefs’ indoor training facility before moving on to Arizona, where SKC will spend the majority of their time prior to opening their season at Chivas USA.

“From a coaching perspective, it’s very exciting to get back on the field,” Sporting manager Peter Vermes said. “But we still have a lot of work to do in preseason here, preparing the team and acquiring a few more players. There is still a lot of work to be done.”

The work starts with molding the roster.

Sporting's Bunbury suffers dislocated elbow

Youngster taken to area hospital during 3-1 Houston preseason win

PHOENIX – An elbow injury to Sporting Kansas City youngster Teal Bunbury forced the US national team striker off the field and into an ambulance during a preseason match against the Houston Dynamo on Tuesday at the Reach 11 Sports Complex.

Houston’s 3-1 win was held up for roughly 20 minutes during the second of three 30-minute periods after Bunbury collided with Dynamo defender Andrew Hainault near the Houston penalty box.

As Bunbury attempted to round Hainult, he was tugged forward and to the ground, the Sporting forward instantly began screaming for assistance from the sideline.

Sporting KC snag Brazilian midfielder as designated player

Attacking midfielder Jeferson joins Sporting from Vasco da Gama

One of the most offensive-minded teams in MLS has added another weapon.

Sporting Kansas City announced on Sunday the loan acquisition of Jéferson, a 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder, as the club’s second designated player. He joins Mexican striker Omar Bravo as a DP.

“I’ve been preparing physically to be able to come here and make an immediate impact,” Jéferson said in a club statement. “I’m very excited to be here and I come with the goal to help the team fulfill its goal of making the playoffs and ultimately going to the final.”

A native of Brasilia, Jéferson has spent the past two seasons with Rio de Janeiro giants Vasco da Gama. The attacking playmaker has also spent time with Santo Andre, Guarani, Atlético Goianiense, and Brasiliense.

Sporting KC acquire the "Haitian Xavi," Peterson Joseph
Vermes has high praise for ex-Braga mid, finally signed by SKC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Peterson Joseph hasn’t had a chance to make a name for himself in Major League Soccer yet, but the 21-year-old midfielder is already set in the nickname department.

Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of Joseph, known as the “Haitian Xavi,” on Thursday afternoon following an extended trial that dragged for almost two months as the club worked out the details of an agreement with Portuguese club SC Braga for the player’s rights.

“It was a long process because his formation rights were owned by Braga,” manager Peter Vermes said. “We got that settled and taken care of so now we have him under contract. I think he has some really good qualities. We wouldn’t have waited this long to sign him if we didn’t [think that]. He can have an impact on this team.”

SKC's Kamara on Impact loss:
"They played our game"

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – No music blared in the home locker room. The flat-screens were silent and dark. One after another, Sporting Kansas City’s players shook their heads and reflected upon an upset loss to an expansion side most expected them to crush.

“I think we got outfought tonight, and I can honestly say that it’s the first time that this team, our team, that it’s happened to us this year,” midfielder Graham Zusi said after the Montreal Impact stunned Sporting 2-0 on Saturday night. “I can pretty much promise you that it won’t happen again.”

Sporting end Seattle's run after epic PK shooutout victory

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Seattle had a chance to make history. And Sporting Kansas City made sure they got directly in the way.

It took 120 minutes of soccer and a penalty-kick shootout, but Sporting ended Seattle’s run of three straight Lamar Hunt US Open Cup titles on Wednesday night as they won their second Open Cup – and first trophy since 2004 – in front of 18,863 at Livestrong Sporting Park.

After a 1-1 draw in regulation and two scoreless extra-time frames, Eddie Johnson concluded the ensuing shootout by sending his spot kick high over Jimmy Nielsen’s goal to give the home team the crown with a 3-2 win on penalties.

Recap: Kamara's late winner beats TFC, keeps SKC on top

TORONTO – Sporting Kansas City dominated the play for much of the game on Saturday against Toronto FC, finally coming away with a 1-0 win after Kei Kamara scored a late goal at BMO Field.

Kamara’s winner came after Graham Zusi tapped a dangerous free kick in his path and the shot deflected off the defensive wall and the fingertips of goalkeeper Milos Kocic in the 83rd minute.

Zusi brace gives Sporting stranglehold on East's top spot

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Sporting Kansas City punched their 2012 playoff ticket with a feat they hadn't managed in more than five years: a home victory over the Chicago Fire.

Sporting gave the Livestrong Sporting Park-record crowd just what they wanted on Friday night, beating the Fire 2-0 behind two goals from Graham Zusi and and Jimmy Nielsen's league-leading 14th clean sheet.

Sporting extended their season-high unbeaten streak to nine games, while Chicago had a four-match winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in their last nine.

The match was physical and chippy all night, with 24 total fouls – 13 by Sporting – and two ejections in second-half stoppage time. Chicago manager Frank Klopas was given a straight red by referee Chris Penso, and left back Gonzalo Segares drew his second yellow.

Feilhaber fits as Espinoza replacement

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Benny Feilhaber. I've been calling for his inclusion in Jurgen Klinsmann's US national team since last summer, and have been known to get into the odd Twitter sparring contest or three about his worth as a player. And I've been saying since about mid-June that Sporting KC should trade for him.

My reasoning is simple: Sporting were very, very good last year largely because they could press high, force turnovers and ram the ball down your throat. They'd also beat the hell out of you on set pieces.

Beyond that, they were pretty ineffective. If you could stretch them out and make them play you across the entire pitch, then they could be had. Houston have basically written the book on that over the past two seasons, and KC knew it.

Now with Tuesday's trade, Feilhaber changes the game for SKC, largely because he's a direct replacement for a guy – Roger Espinoza – with a very different skill set.

Sporting KC introduce Claudio Bieler as Designated Player

Sporting Kansas City introduced 28-year-old forward Claudio Bieler as a Designated Player on Tuesday in a press conference held at Livestrong Sporting Park. He will be added to the club's roster pending receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa, and will occupy a senior international roster spot.

"He's proven over the years that he's a very consistent goalscorer," Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "We think he's got a lot of good qualities that can fit into our team. Everything from his commitment to being a team player, to his work ethic out on the field, to a guy that lives and breathes for club that he plays for. We're excited that we're able to finally secure him and add a player of his caliber to our organization."
