Philadelphia Union

Looks like Philadelphia will be Major League Soccer's 16th team!

Quote:
The development will take place over several phases:
An ownership group is working closely with Major League Soccer in an effort to bring the League's 16th franchise to Philadelphia. If successful, development will begin with the construction of a $115 million, 20,000 seat multi-use stadium at the foot of the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester.
Phase one, expected to begin this fall, will include the stadium, 186 town homes; 25 apartment residences; 335,000 sq feet of office space; a convention and exposition center of approximately 200,000 sq. feet; 22,215 sq. feet of retail space; and structured parking with capacity for 1,350 cars. In addition, there will be substantial remediation and infrastructure construction highlighted by new streets, greenways, and a riverside promenade that will include boat slips.
Phase two will include an additional 200 apartment units, 100,000 sq. feet of office space as well as retail space in excess of 22,000 sq. feet.

The projected economic impact includes:
More than 2,600 construction jobs
At least 800 new net jobs on an annualized basis
On an annual basis, the project will generate $19 million in total tax revenue (65% of which accrues to the Commonwealth)

Home of Philadelphia Union Rising Rapidly

Activity on the Chester waterfront is kicking into high gear as the home of the Philadelphia Union rises ever-higher each day.

“Years of hard work from many people have gone into making this stadium project a reality and it’s a spectacular site to see the building rapidly taking shape,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “Our construction partners are working relentlessly, with about 150 workers on site every day, and we’re extremely appreciative of their commitment. We’re very proud to be revitalizing the Chester waterfront into a special place where people can come work, live and play.”

The Columbus Crew stands poised two lose two of its most important players, but those imminent losses aren't being driven by the salary cap.

2008 MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto and U.S. national team midfielder Robbie Rogers are highly unlikely to return to Columbus, and sources tell SBI that Crew head coach Robert Warzycha had a major falling out with both players, sparking the process that will likely lead to both their departures.

Warzycha endured serious criticism for his decisions not to play Schelotto in the Crew's first-round playoff opener against Real Salt Lake, and his decision to bench Robbie Rogers in game two of the RSL series. Columbus lost both matches.

Reports have blamed Schelotto's impending move out of Columbus on his salary demands, and the Crew's reluctance to keep him as a Designated Player, but that is looking more and more like the story Columbus is shaping to soften the back-lash the Crew is likely to face for letting Schelotto go. Don't be surprised to see Schelotto traded and play for less than Designated Player money with his new club.

As for Rogers, he is a free agent who could make a move to Europe, but sources tell SBI that Rogers is open to staying in MLS, just not with the Crew. A reunion with Philadelphia head coach Peter Nowak, who coached Rogers on the Olympic and national team, is a possibility.

Philadelphia players meet their adoring public

Sizable crowd turns out to meet newest Union members
- By Andy Jasner / MLSnet.com Staff

PHILADELPHIA -- The first 11 players in Philadelphia Union history had a chance to mingle with the club's already passionate fan base Tuesday night at Tir Na Nog, an Irish pub in the downtown area.

They were amazed by the reaction.

In a packed restaurant with the Sons of Ben chanting, the players soon realized how excitable the region is for Major League Soccer. They had heard about the fans, but witnessing it in person was something to see.

"This is incredible, let me tell you," said defender David Myrie, who played last season for the Chicago Fire. "You look around and it makes you want to play right now. These fans are going crazy. I was told they were like this and it's true. I can't wait to get started for real in 2010."

The players signed autographs and shook hands. They chatted with the Sons of Ben and the hundreds of other patrons. Being in this type of atmosphere was more than they imagined.

Energy company PPL Corp. is close to signing a 10-year, $20 million naming-rights deal with the Philadelphia Union, the region's new pro soccer team. The Union's new stadium, under construction in the city of Chester, will be called PPL Park.

Team officials confirmed the outlines of deal, first reported in Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, that marks another major step for the return of pro soccer to the region.

The Union will be Major League Soccer's 16th team when they take the field in March. The first home game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, as the 18,500-seat Chester stadium will not be finished in time for the April opener, team officials said earlier.

Fred has quickly taken on a leadership role in the Union locker room

he Philadelphia Union held its final preseason practice under cloudy skies yesterday, but it was the team's first official meeting without the cloud of collective bargaining talks hanging overhead.
Now, the team is focused on finalizing the roster for Major League Soccer's roster compliance deadline tomorrow, but more importantly putting together the definitive starting 11 for Thursday's opener against Seattle.

One player who definitely won't be on the field for the league opener is Fred, the crafty Brazilian midfielder the Union acquired from D.C. United just hours before January's MLS SuperDraft. Fred will serve a one-game suspension from a red-card infraction he picked up in the 92nd minute of D.C.'s regular-season finale against Kansas City last season. League rules dictate that two yellow cards, which amount to a red, are not transferable, but bona fide red cards do rollover.

The Philadelphia Union are set to play in front of their home fans for the first time as they wait for their new stadium to open.

The expansion Union make their home debut Saturday night when they meet winless D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philadelphia (0-1-0) will make its debut at soccer-specific PPL Park on June 27 against Seattle. With the stadium not ready, the Union will play their first two home games at Lincoln Financial Field.

Vice President Joe Biden will be in attendance Saturday, and Philadelphia is anxious to put on a good show for its supporters - including the Sons of Ben fan group that was instrumental in the city being awarded a franchise.

Philadelphia Union President Tom Veit Stepping Down

Nov 1, 2010 - Following a season inaugural season that can reasonably be called a success off the field and acceptable on it, Philadelphia President Tom Veit is stepping down.

Veit was originally brought to the organization as a consultant and will now return to that roll, something he will be able to do from his home in Tampa, Fla.

"It was important for me to know that when I was ready to step down our organization was rock solid and today I truly believe that it is," Veit told the Philadelphia Union website. "The fact that I get to return to a part of business that I love, consulting, and still be able to work with the Union on a daily basis is a dream come true."

YEAR ONE: 2010 in Review: Best & worst of Philadelphia

CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union entered their first season as Major League Soccer’s 16th franchise with lofty expectations and a ton of fan support. Thirty matches later, the Union didn’t qualify for the postseason. But they definitely entertained and took a number of big steps forward as they prepare for Year 2.

After suffering through a number of mistaken-laden matches early in the year, Peter Nowak’s squad came together as the year progressed and finished their schedule in much better shape than they started it. Here are the highlights of this past season.

Best moment of the year
In effect, the Union put on two home openers for Philly soccer fans: the team’s first home game at Lincoln Financial Field in April, then the debut of PPL Park in June. Both were amazing experiences for the fans, who flooded both stadiums and were rewarded with big wins for Nowak’s team – 3-2 win over D.C. United at the Linc and 3-1 over Seattle in the Union’s new home venue.

Worst moment
Coming off two impressive 1-1 draws against defending champions Real Salt Lake and Colorado, the Union travelled to the nation’s capital in August to take on the last-place D.C. United with optimism soaring. Nowak’s team proceeded to get overrun in a 2-0 defeat that was easily their worst performance all year as the defensive mental errors that seemed to be the team’s calling card for much of the season doomed them.

Union Enjoy Another SuperDraft

When all was said and done in Baltimore, the Philadelphia Union seemed pleased with the way the 2011 SuperDraft went. Philly picked up three players, adding depth to three different positions on the field.

They started with the number five overall pick in the draft where they tabbed University of Maryland goalkeeper Zac MacMath. Labeled as the best GK in the draft, MacMath left school with one year of eligibility left, feeling that now was the time to go pro. He is a member of the USA U-20 team.

The 19-year-old is expected to be one-third of a goalkeeping trio that includes returnee Brad Knighton and long rumored signee Faryd Mondragon.

With their second pick, the Union tabbed University of North Carolina midfielder Michael Farfan. By all accounts, Farfan was expected to go somewhere in the first round, so Union management was both surprised and pleased that he was still available when it was their turn to pick in round two. Farfan is a versatile player who might be able to play in a few different attacking spots.

With their third pick, Philadelphia opted for forward Levi Houapeu out of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Houapeu has good speed and finishing skills that saw him connect for 15 goals in each of his last two college seasons.

The newest members of the Union were presented to Union supporters last night at Tir Na Nog in downtown Baltimore.

Hackworth gets his man in Agorsor

Union keen on former Virginia star, despite injury

John Hackworth has seen many players score many goals, in many different games.

But for the Philadelphia Union assistant coach and former technical director of the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Bradenton Academy, certain ones stand out.

Just like the time Chris Agorsor scored four times for the Baltimore Bays in the Development Academy finals in 2008.

“And they weren’t just garbage goals,” Hackworth told MLSsoccer.com. “It was a high-level game and he was excellent.”

Since then, however, Agorsor’s soccer career has been both arduous and circuitous.

Considered by some to be the top recruit in the nation only three years ago, the Baltimore native signed on to play for Virginia in 2008. A serious knee injury and then a subsequent ankle sprain stalled his progress at UVA, where he stayed for just two seasons before trying to catch on in Europe.
