ESPN to show MLS and European football in Britain

LONDON (AP) - ESPN has continued building up its live football content in Britain and Ireland, buying the rights to broadcast Major League Soccer and some top European leagues.

The first live MLS match will be on Aug. 8 when England midfielder David Beckham's Los Angeles plays New England. In the deal for the rest of the current season, at least five playoffs and the MLS final will be broadcast.

In a multiyear deal with the Bundesliga, up to five live matches will be shown each week - starting with Wolfsburg-Stuttgart on Aug. 7.

The traditional curtainraiser to the Italian season, the Italian Super Cup, will be shown live on Aug. 8. Serie A champion Inter Milan and Coppa Italia winner Lazio are playing at The Bird's Nest in Beijing.

ESPN has also struck deals with the Portuguese Liga, the Dutch Eredivisie and the Russian Premier League.

ESPN has been picking up rights previously held by Setanta after the network collapsed in Britain due to financial problems.

Next season, ESPN will show 46 live topflight English matches in Britain and 30 Scottish fixtures

Setanta is no more !!!

How is that possible?

Oh!! .. No football between June & August, No MCI (money coming in)
sad to see them go.

We are lucky in USA, in that we get to see more soccer (football) than most countries. We have 2 channels dedicated to soccer specifically (Gol, FSC), and ESPN is stepping up to the plate as of late; plus if you live in a major city, like NYC, Chicago or Dallas, you get the spanish language channels (Univision (NBC), Telemundo, Galavision, Telefutura (limited)), or RAI (NYC) that show a multitude of game.

We can follow football from North, Central & South America(s), as well as Europe all from our comfy couches.
