Miami (Not Fart Lauderdale), here we come !!

New stadium could boost Miami's chances of MLS return

By Simon Evans

MIAMI, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The chances of Major League Soccer returning to Miami have been boosted after city politicians gave their backing to the building of a new, purpose-built, stadium for the sport.

A huge redevelopment plan for downtown Miami includes the demolition of the Orange Bowl stadium and its replacement by a new baseball park for the Florida Marlins and a soccer-specific venue.

Miami Dade County, which backed the plan on Tuesday, is ready to put aside $50 million for the new soccer stadium and that could help persuade Major League Soccer (MLS) that Miami is the right place for an expansion team.

The absence of a central and soccer-specific stadium contributed to the lack of success of the Miami Fusion - a MLS franchise between 1998 and 2001 who ended up playing in the neighbouring city of Fort Lauderdale.

"Mayor (Manny) Diaz has been a champion of the sport and has been speaking with us for more than a year," MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche told Reuters.

"The Orange Bowl site connects with the soccer public in the city and we believe a MLS team in Miami could serve a part of the community that is not necessarily served by other sports at the moment."

Courtemanche said there was no shortage of interest being displayed from potential investors in a franchise.

"There are multiple individuals and organisations that have contracted us regarding an expansion team - the interest is there," he added, before reiterating there remained intense competition from other cities for expansion slots.

The MLS will have 14 teams next season with the return of the San Jose Earthquakes and will add a team in Seattle in 2009 and then look to have a 16th team in place for 2010.

A decision on the 16th team will likely be made by next March with several cities - including Philadelphia, St. Louis and Detroit in contention with Miami.

Miami already has a professional team, Miami FC, who play in the United Soccer Leagues, a rung below the MLS, and their president Aaron Davidson welcomed the plan for a new venue.

"It is phenomenal and the important thing is for everyone to come together to get the best possible professional team in this city, whatever league it is in," Davidson told Reuters.

"There is now a base of land and money and a willingness from the city and the county to support the growth of soccer at a professional level," added Davidson, whose club is owned by Brazilian sports media firm Traffic Sports.

Although Miami FC and Traffic have not been in talks with the MLS about becoming an expansion team, Davidson said they were open to being part of the process.

Miami FC's Brazilian links have enabled them to bring in players like ex-World Cup winners Romario and current club head coach Zinho and the Latin American connections in Miami appeal to the MLS.

"The South Florida market has become very different in the past six or seven years with the influx of people from Latin America from soccer-loving countries," said Courtemanche.

Another TWIST in the Miami Horizon ....

FIU hopes new stadium lures MLS

By MICHELLE KAUFMAN (Miami Herald)

Major League Soccer is flattered to have a new South Florida suitor, but the league is not ready to jump at Pete Garcia's offer. Garcia, the athletic director at Florida International University, suggested an MLS team could play rent-free at the Panthers' new 18,000-seat stadium, which is expected to open in September. He hopes FIU will become a go-to venue for pro soccer and international matches now that the Orange Bowl is shutting down.

Back in 1996-1997 BASICALLY the same was suggested to the then up and coming Miami Fusion FC when the OB talks fell thru..

Had the Management of the Fusion done that...They would still be in existence TODAY.. Guaranteed

screw st louis and detroit!! maybe philly because they're a solid sports town but i'd love a team in miami. IMO the MLS should've went there before they re-visited SJ and now seattle because of the huge latin american contingent there.

plus, a team in miami would make my road-trips to watch the TFC there much more comfortable because i have a condo just north in pompano

another city which is in dire need of an MLS franchise is montreal. they're in dire need of a franchise and we are in dire need of a rivalry.

Well, Montreal is in the USL and they've already got a good rivalry with Rochester. I doubt they'll be in MLS anytime soon.

... reports are that Miami and MLS could not come up with an ownership group to field a team, thus the future prospects of "top flight" football in Miami will have to wait for another day.

The Mayor is keen on bringing "soccer" to the region, for purely financial reasons. Baseball has been a bust in Miami; the Marlins have won championships playing in empty stadiums. The Dolphins are a league joke, and they only play 8 home games per year, with a soccer specific stadium, Miami could attract more international matches as well as continue to be a hub for the development of the game in this country.

On the other hand, North of the border, the game has taken root and is flourishing. If only the Canadian Football Federation had money.

Montreal is in USL but is vying to be included into the top flight. Vancouver is also pushing for inclusion, and now the rumor is that Ottawa is now in the mix for a MLS team.

The Dolphins Organization has in MIND for the 2010 Spring, when their Stadium gets totally renovated, and the Marlins have moved back to Miami...to be bringing TOP FLIGHT Soccer to their facilities ... Even Libertadores games are in their mind ...

Atlanta, St. Louis Doubtful To See MLS Clubs By 2011

January 17, 2009

Of the seven cities to submit formal bids for Major League Expansion teams in 2011, it looks doubtful that Atlanta or St. Louis have a shot.

Atlanta is definitely  out. Arthur Blank could not find a partner in time to secure the funds to build a stadium, especially since the buy-in fee of $40 million is non-negotiable. The Atlanta Falcons owner will now have to wait until MLS is accepting applications for expansion teams sometime after 2011.

“In mid-October, AMB Group submitted its bid application to own and operate a Major League Soccer team in metro Atlanta,” said Kim Shreckengost, executive vice president at the AMB Group LLC and Blank’s chief of staff, according to bizjournals.com. “We recently informed MLS officials that we will not be ready to field a team in the 2011 season, which is the season currently under review for two expansion teams, primarily because we didn’t feel we would be able to complete a public/private partnership arrangement in the timeframe necessary to build a soccer stadium by 2011.”

Money also looks to be the problem for the St. Louis bid. The investment group interested is headed by Jeff Cooper. He met with MLS commissioner Don Garber prior to the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

“We really want to be in St. Louis,” Garber said according to STLToday.com, “but in order to be here, we have to be sure that every aspect of Jeff Cooper’s bid is solid and one of the weaknesses it has today is that Jeff has not been able to secure the investor who has very deep pockets.

“And that’s not just to satisfy the league’s needs, that’s to assure that the team will be successful in St. Louis, that it can make the right investments in the community, that it can make the right investments in player development, fan development, marketing, promotion, both on- and off-field staff. Lastly, should there be economic challenges for the league, we need to know that the group can have a couple of rocky years. Right now, we’re not secure that his group can satisfy the objectives so the team will be successful. Now, other bids have other weaknesses.”

Cooper, however, is remaining optimistic. He thinks he can bring in the financial backing to circumnavigate any financial pressures.

“What we’re doing is continuing to work, as we always have been,” said Cooper. “We’ve got a gigantic project which requires a big ownership group. Like we’ve been doing for the past nine months, we’re trying to strengthen our group. I don’t perceive it as being that big a hurdle. I think we are close.”

Miami remains in pole position for one of the two available 2011 slots thanks to its backing from high-profile European giants FC Barcelona. However, if cities continue to drop out (Montreal balked at the buy-in fee earlier), it won’t have too much competition left.

Garber: Barcelona/Miami MLS Team Would Start in 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio—

MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed on Wednesday what has long been rumored about the Miami expansion team, which is affiliated with Catalan giants Barcelona: They will begin play in 2010, if their bid is accepted.

"Barcelona and Miami, in partnership with [Bolivian-American tech magnate] Marcelo Claure, are focused on 2010," he said today at a press event here. "If Miami gets a franchise, they’ll be starting in the 2010 season."

The Barcelona/Miami bid was submitted in December as part of the league's planned expansion for 2011. Other cities in the running include Portland, St. Louis, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Atlanta. Montreal and Atlanta have since dropped their bids. The proposed Miami franchise, according to Garber, would be the only one to receive the special dispensation to move up its debut by a year, to 2010.

An announcement on the two winning bids is due next month, around the time with the 2009 MLS season kicks off on March 19.

The favorites currently are Miami, Vancouver, and Portland. But the commissioner spoke about the prospects of the other two remaining hopefuls, St. Louis and Ottawa.

"St. Louis is making good progress," he said. "I have some meetings with their ownership group later today and a potential partner they’ve brought in on the corporate side. They continue to be very active, and as I’ve said before, we’d love to have a team in St. Louis."

The chances for Ottawa, which would be the second smallest metro area in MLS (after Salt Lake City), rest solely on the ownership group's ability to deliver on the promise of a soccer-specific stadium.

"We can’t go to Ottawa or any other city unless we have the appropriate venue," Garber said. "The venue Eugene Melnyk is proposing, they’ve got a really good shot for a team. But without a stadium, they’d never have a shot at all.

Barcelona reconsiders MLS expansion bid..

ESPNsoccernet news services

February 21, 2009

Spanish powerhouse Barcelona's attempt to land a MLS expansion franchise in Miami had been considered one of the front-runners. However, that bid is now shrouded in doubt  after the club announced at its biannual financial meeting that its reconsidering its plans.

"[The MLS bid is] very delicate and we are evaluating if the situation allows for the model planned to be implemented in Miami or not," said Barcelona's corporate director general Joel Oliver on the team's Web site. Oliver added that the economic downturn could force Barcelona to delay its bid to a later date.

"We want to enter the American league, but not at the cost of financial risk [to the club]" Oliver said. "The chances of us not joining are higher than when we announced our interest."

Barcelona's Miami bid, part of a partnership with Bolivian tech magnate Marcelo Claure, was one of seven submitted last year to MLS. Other cities included Vancouver, Ottawa, Portland, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Montreal -- with Atlanta and Montreal having since dropped out of the running. The Miami bid was regarded as one of the favorites, primarily due to Barcelona's involvement, with plans to begin play in 2010 if successful.
