Unfortunately I'll be out of town July 27-August 27, so I'll only see the first round of games and the final.

Galaxy 2-1 Pachuca

(no Beckham for Galaxy, still injured)

Funny how one of the crappiest teams in the league can beat the reigning North American and Copa Sudamericana champions. Didn't get a chance to watch, but I guess they weren't fielding a full-strength side or the Galaxy just pulled something off.

I'd be surprised if Pachuca didn't field their first team, the winners get a huge amount of money.

A bit of a fluke win actually. Pachuca dominated the possesion, Galaxy looked horrible. Bunkered down in defense. Then one good pass from Donovan led to a surprise goal. Looked like Pachuca got nervous and moved even more people up so they were just hammering on the Galaxy defense which led to a goal. Then a pretty decent shot on goal from Cobi Jones led to a Donovan flick (not sure if it was intentional or if he was trying to get out of the way) but it landed in the net. Pretty surprising win though. But watching the game, I have come to this conclusion. Play Donovan as a pure striker. He is the only one with pace on the team, and he sucks in the mid. It might be because no one is looking for his passes. But now Beckham is here, Donovan may be able to get on his crosses. One thing is for sure, Galaxy have more crap players than good.

Thanks for the recap, I figured a fluke win was the most likely scenario. Donovan could get onto Beckham's crosses, yes, but it seems to me Pavón would do better at that, plus a big guy like Pavón knocking down balls for Donovan (moved up front) would be great.

Pavon missed some good chance yesterday. He just seems so slow. I hope this is just getting used to his new team, but he is disappointing for me right now.

Here is some interesting thoughts from one of the writers on the league.

A Super beginning

I didn't know what to expect from the inaugural night of SuperLiga, a Champions League-hybrid tournament featuring the four of the top club teams from MLS and the Mexican First Division. But its debut night was a winner -- especially for MLS. Highly entertaining. Passionate. Fast-paced. Great goals (How about that gorgeous chip over the 'keeper by FC Dallas' Arturo Alvarez?) MLS sides went 1-0-1 on Tuesday, with David Beckham-less L.A. beating Mexican champion Pachuca 2-1 at the Home Depot Center and FC Dallas earning a controversial 1-1 draw against CD Guadalajara, which scored its lone goal after a blatant handball. The tourney continues Wednesday night when D.C. United meets Morelia and Houston plays host to Club América. Granted, the Mexican sides are in preseason form, they didn't feature their strongest sides and they will not play difficult road games south of the border, but don't overlook the importance of doing well in tournaments like these (as well as the CONCACAF Champions' Cup). For all the talk about building MLS via Brand Beckham, earning respect and credibility in the Hispanic market is just as important for the long-term success of the league. And SuperLiga can go a long way toward pulling that off. It was just one night, but all in all, it was a banner one for MLS.
