MLS wants second New York team

Mets Said to Be Looking Into an MLS Franchise

The New York Mets have recast their club with a strong Hispanic flavor and may soon expand beyond America's pastime and embrace the world's game: soccer. The Mets and several groups of investors have held discussions about obtaining the rights to operate a Major League Soccer team, which could not begin play until 2010 at the earliest, an industry executive said. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said that a number of cities -- Philadelphia; Atlanta; St. Louis; Seattle; San Diego; Las Vegas; Portland, Ore.; and Vancouver, British Columbia -- are aggressively seeking teams but that the league's preference was for a second team in the New York area.

I'm sure Mets FC would be HajdukSplit's new favorite team.

well if there gonna make a 2nd NY team...just move it down here and make a Philly team

Is it true that if you don't use it, you lose it?

I heard about this and I still can't make sense of it. The first team doesn't get enough support and they want a second?? Seriously, give it to Philly. How can they even consider this right now?

Let's be serious, if there was a city to have two teams it would have to be Toronto. The crowds, attendance, and general support as indicated by 10 Toronto FC players high in the All-Star voting is unmatched in MLS.

Anyways... go Mutts!

I agree with that. I was going to say a second Canadian team would be better than a second in new york right now.

Red Bull does not get any support because they play in Giants Stadium...simple enough. I am sure when they move to their new stadium they will draw well

Mets are interested in an MLS franchise, not surprising, considering the majority of Hispanics and other minorities (European immigrants interested in baseball) are Mets fans and they can easily play somewhere in Long Island probably. I am for a second team in NY/NJ, people like soccer with a passion here but we can't get excited about a team playing in Giants Stadium

if we had a true stadium, we would have the best attendance in the league, trust me

at Giants Stadium, I'd say 15,000, unfortuntely people will look at the game where it was monsoon like conditions and complain only like 1,000 showed up,,,I doubt 20,000 would go to Toronto on monsoon like conditions

The Red Bulls would definitely do better in NYC. We have the same problem in New England. I think the Revolution would do much better in Boston at a venue like Nickerson field.

actually north Jersey is a hotbed for soccer, I'm sure when this new stadium is built, it will be packed and excitement will return

Giants Stadium is a pain in the ass to get to (or should I say exit) and no public transportation which is a disaster for NYC/NJ teams (Islanders, Giants/Jets, Devils, Nets all struggle with attendance and this is the main reason why).

Also I hate the fact they have to play on turf but when the big European clubs come they put in grass

Yep , right here in Queens. Home to the most diverse population in the world. Not in the USA, but the world. People don't understand what a pain in the ass it is. Well maybe the boys in Boston have it worse. BTW how can you have a stadium ,and no public transport to the stadium like in Foxboro ?. I was gonna go to see the US play in the Gold Cup with a few buddies. Chinatown bus to beantown, then public transport to foxboro. No such luck. When the RB's move into Harrison, things will change. Right next to Kearny[the biggest hotbed of soccer in the USA] with PATH trains from Mnahattan

yeah, when the new stadium is made I will go to many games. Giants Stadium is a pain in the ass because no public transportation and it is an awful atmosphere for a soccer game. Even for football with a sell out the atmosphere isn't that great (mainly Giants games)
