When it comes to payday, some MLS players are in the minor leagues

The league's players' union released its list of salaries last week, and a few things immediately jumped out. David Beckham is taking in $5.5 million in salary alone, more than enough to keep up with the Hollywood set. But he and a handful of other MLS stars are the exception, not the rule.

Of the 356 players, 91 are making $17,700 or less. That wouldn't even cover the shopping bills for the England WAGs (wives and girlfriends) during last summer's World Cup. Of those low-budget players, 56 are earning just $12,900. That's above the minimum wage, but not by much.

"Those deals are terrible, frankly," said Bob Foose, the union's executive director. "It's really almost impossible to do it without your parents supporting you."
Damn thats a pretty low salary.

I read a similar article in the NY Times on Wednesday. As the league grows, the salaries will get bigger. I do agree, though, that the lowest salary is a pittance.

I don't understand how those Red Bull NY youngsters can live on that salary, even $50,000 is tough to live in NY/NJ. Hopefully the young players making $17,000 get some housing from the club, I know they do that in Europe
