Recommend me some Latin American authors!

I just finished reading Animal World by Antonio di Benedetto...

I've previously read Holy Smoke by Guillermo Infante and a couple of Gabriel Garcia Marquez books, Ernesto Sabato's The Tunnel...and the much hyped The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

I asked a Colombian friend for recommendations but a lot of the books he recommends are not translated into English... and it seems to me at least that Latin American works don't get translated as much unless they are best-sellers or the author commands some respectability...

So yeah recommend away please...

Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig.
Something by Julio Cortazar, Hopscotch preferably.
Something by Mario Vargas Llosa, i've read only the Feast of the Goat.
Something by Roberto Bolaño, that's the most fashionable choice by far 2666 i guess.

Borges, Bioy Casares, Cortazar, Ruben Dario, Octavio Paz, Machado de Assis, Drummond, Guimarães Rosa, Juan Rulfo, Horacio Quiroga, they all have some english translations, maybe some rare, but you can try an amazon search to see what you find.

I think you'd enjoy Borges a lot, although he mistankenly believes there are no camels in the Quran.

Not bigotting

Cortazar is brilliant.

He does touch the Quran and the Arabian nights here and there, reading it like a blind seer would. The argument went ca.: The fact that there're no camels in the Quran means it is an Arab book, if anyone ever doubted that. Borges got the idea from Gibbon or someone, I guess.

It is more that someone was complaning a book looked not realistic because didnt mention details that obvious to anyone who lived on those place, so that book lacked authenticy. So Borges argued, Literature does not represent the reality with precision, hence the non camels on quran and why the book is authentic. It much about argentine writers who apparently didnt wrote with argie themes, language, etc. It is in the essay Argentine writer and tradition. And yes, he claims it is Gibbon, but it is probally, just a way to Borges say: you cannot dismiss me because you only read resumed versions of Decline and Fall.

As the 1001 Nights, he was quite knowledgable, as 1001 is not arabian literature, but something that happened in the world.
