You should read the books that Borges wrote for him

Btw, the guy has punched Gabo once on the face, fighting for a women. I guess the Nobel can have their boxing nights now.

Thanks you Jun; now as the poet said, "If Llosa comes, can Murakami be far behind?"

As long as we are on the topic, a toast too to Liu Xiao Po who just won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize even though they don't serve champaign in maximum security prisons.

One punch = 28 years [before Llosa's own lit prize], it's more effective than xt bans, no?

For your pleasure, here's an excerpt from an earlier Llosa interview.

Quote:
INTERVIEWER

What was your relationship to Borges?

VARGAS LLOSA

I saw him for the first time in Paris, where I lived in the early sixties. He was there giving seminars on the literature of the fantastic and gauchesca literature. Later I interviewed him for the Office de Radio Television Française where I was working at the time. I still remember it with emotion. After that, we saw each other several times in different parts of the world, even in Lima, where I gave a dinner for him. At the end he asked me to take him to the toilet. When he was peeing he suddenly said, The Catholics, do you think they are serious? Probably not.

It would be nice to see Murakami winning it one day Did you manage to catch the Norwegian Wood adaptation?

And I really like that interview with Vargas Llosa, a lot of what he said about writing really resonated with me. Just makes me doubly glad that he won the Nobel this year

Wow! I didn't know there was a Norwegian Wood film in the works.

Have either of you seen the Tony Takitani adaptation?

Tony Takitani no, but I heard it was a good adaptation. Can't say the same for the Norwegian Wood one, reviews have not been particularly encouraging.

I think the part were he says to the old aristocratic blind man that his house was falling apart and he could not see it, and had no idea Borges would resent it was the funniest... Had Borges any energy and Vargas would be lost in some multi-universe of interpretative clones...

As winning the Nobel (the obviously irrelevance of it), americans have a reason to resent the academy, as Cormac McCarthy and Pynchon are alive, writing and quite good. And brazilian Ariano Suassuna is quite good, even superior in originality to Llosa, but he I am sure the Nobel will finally cease to be when they award to Paulo Coelho.

Sarmiento, for example, who never wrote a novel, is in my opinion one of the greatest storytellers Latin America has produced; his Facundo is a masterwork
I've read that one with a smile on my face, really fun book for most of the part. Plus he was trully a character, to think he was our President and later seeing the sort of those we had (and the world had) feels really sad. Him San Martin, Belgrano, Moreno, even the "pirate" Brown and el "Manco" Paz, such great characters...we totally wasted them. What an ungrateful pseudo country we are (being generous with the "we" part).

Dman he likes neruda hehe...plus I allways found bizarre seeing Borges as being an original writer.

The word original is a bit like "Underated" here... means nothing related to the meaning found in dictionaries, but something that only the user has any notion, which is obviously, not original.

For sure !!!

Congrats to DON MARIO, a worthy winner!
Too bad he didn't become president (he was robbed by Fujimori and El Apra).

...The word for Borges and so many others is singularity. A singularity that is far from being original, but is singular since the beginning; while works again, again and again...

I have nothing original to say about Borges, except maybe that there is the word Camel on the Koran. And that I do not believe he did not saw that not only Poe was making up all the story of composition of The Raven, but Coleridge did the same with Kublai Khan.

As anything, there is nothing original those days, that is why I am reading Paul Valéry.
