I wanted to write about some book-related memories from my childhood. Of course anyone is more than welcome to contribute their own.
I'm sure some of you remember R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series. At primary school, through some years it was all the rage, I suppose at that point, a series which provoked those who hadn't been reading much, if at all, to... read.
This would of been during or before grade four. At certain times during the day, you could see these books piled up on desks; I suppose it wasn't all about their enjoyment of the text, but also to read this series was the "in" thing to do?
I went to two primary schools, one from grades one to four, the second, five and six. These memories are from the first school, I'm absolutely sure. Grade four I would of been ten, I think.
I may be wrong, but it's my perception that I wasn't caught up in this frenzy as quickly as my classmates were. Eventually I did.
There's two memories which illustrate this passion. Once I was with my best friend at a department store, not the largest I think. It was late in the afternoon and many stores were closed or preparing to. I presume this day was a Sunday.
We were inside a store. I noticed a rack which held a large amount of Goosebumps books. I perused through, and spotted a cover which I wasn't familiar with. This led to a great deal of excitement; I picked it up and asked if it could be bought for me. I was informed of how close the store was to shutting its doors, still I'm sure the purchase was made.
The second, this time centred at our house, the same house you can find me in as I type this. I'd accumulated a large amount of books from this series, dozens and dozens. I'd stored them in a crate, red I think. My friend was there, and I lent him some copies. Or maybe even the entire crate, he exerted considerable influence over me. But that's another story.
