Mmm the obvious ones, the mafia stuff from the guy that wrote God Father, Mario Puzo. His mafia books are quite excellent, personal favourite is The Sicilian. About a 40s Sicilian folk hero/rebel/gangster. Love the scenery and the classic robin hood like story. His other more traditional american mafia stuff besides God father is good too.
They are a bit like a Mafia trilogy though the stories has nothing to do with eachother. Besides the God Father, there is the Last Don. And his last book Omerta. Last one is not so traditional mob stuff, not much violence and conflicts but a wonderful story about mobster life still.
So havent really gotten into this genre beside these books. Usually the crime stuff I read is in the perspective of the cops/FBI/CIA/Interpol point of view. Personal favourite being Michael Connolly's series about the LA cop Harry Bosch.
