The Henrik Ibsen anniversary

So last year was 100 years since Henrik Ibsen was born. One of the grand old men of norwegian litterature. I think all the norwegian on this forum has gone through the four greats: Ibsen, Alexander Kielland, Bjřrnstjerne Bjřrnson and Jonas Lie in high school. But anyway last year was the great mans anniversary and I was wondering what books you have read by him. How big is he outside of Norway?? The reason for my inquiry is that the teachers and lecturers in norwegian always brag about Ibsen being one of the writers that gets his plays played the most. Not only in Norway, but all over the world. His norwegian equivalent today is perhaps Jon Fosse.

I personally have seen, and read these plays:

The Wild Duck
A Dolls House
Peer Gynt
Brand

These are all classics.

And as a sidenote, who would you say is the most talented of August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen. I cant say I have read too much of Strindberg, but he is perhaps the most famous swedish writer, and they will always be our nemesises...

Ibsen for me is the greatest writer I have ever encountered. I would dare to say he even surpasses Shakespear for his era. He's the main reason I aspire now to become a playwright. He has an ability to weave a majestic web of drama culiminating in extremely powerful endings. He also dared to challenge the social norms of the Victorian Age and for this I say that he took a bigger risks than other famous playwrights and deserves more praise.

Strindberg I know very little of but I'm trying to find out more.

Yeah I agree with you on him challenging the social norms, he was very good at that. But I dont know if you have read much of Hamsun. He is better in my view. His book; "Sult" is amazing.

And good luck on being a playwrighter. Let me know if you publish something. I will try to get it.

Yeah, that was an awesome book.

I've also read his very last book (Paa gjengrodde Stier, English title On Overgrown Paths), it was a diary from the time after WWII when he was an old man already and the state arrested him and put on trial for supporting the Nazis. It was a pretty strange book, he was really apathetic about the whole thing, he didn't really seem to care about this attempt of turning him from hero to villain.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim
