King Lear

how far do you agree that the tragic effect in King Lear is due more to the cruelty of the young characters than the foolishness of the old?

lear's foolishness set off a domino effect so I guess there is a case for saying that his denouncement and banishment of Cordelia has wider consequences.

But it almost goes without saying that the cruelty of the two sisters - once they have gained the scope to deploy it - is sadistic, unrelenting and callous.

but as the king (and a human) ain't he allowed to have a bad day at the office?

Why do you ask?

Sounds like an essay question

lol...sounds like an essay question to me. On another note, Ian Mckellan is coming out here to NZ with the royal shakespear company to perform King Lear in August....I'll probably go to it.

Just read this the other week and loved it.
Just sad that Cordelia had to die at the end, i enjoy Shakespear a great deal but wish that all the hero characters in his plays weren't doomed to failure (dead, family dead, go mad etc)

Not all were doomed, Antigonus made his "exit, pursued by a bear" in The Winter's Tale. A very subtle hint, no?

If they ever existed, which of the character from A Winter's tale or King Lear are alive today...?

Yes, we are all doomed.

But, hey, 'ripeness is all' said the diseased and disreputable vagrant of a son to the recently eye-gouged and suicidal drip of a father.
