Thanks Viola

Here is the new Sappho poem translated by Martin West of the Times' Literary Supplement (21 June 2005). The words in square brackets are supplied by conjecture by Martin West.

"[You for] the fragrant-blossomed Muses’ lovely gifts
[be zealous,] girls, [and the] clear melodious lyre:

[but my once tender] body old age now
[has seized;] my hair’s turned [white] instead of dark;

my heart’s grown heavy, my knees will not support me,
that once on a time were fleet for the dance as fawns.

This state I oft bemoan; but what’s to do?
Not to grow old, being human, there’s no way.

Tithonus once, the tale was, rose-armed Dawn,
love-smitten, carried off to the world’s end,

handsome and young then, yet in time grey age
o’ertook him, husband of immortal wife."

A painting of Sappho by Gustave Moreau, 1871

She'll be busy this weekend what with the parade and all...

You know the scene it's very hum-drum
And my favorite song's entitled "Boredom"...

Such things are the real treat for anyone who deals with ancient history and ancient literature...we all know that such pieces are still out there, waiting to be found, and now this. Simply great!

And yes RIO, the girls are waiting for her...

Now, it is just to get Ovid's Letter to her in the Heroides

Kat: "JCam, you may quote me now, but you are quite wise".

Kat: "JCam knows, we do not doubt in him".

Amazing. I find it funny that, thanks to the progress of science and of manyt things, it's easier to find this stuff now than 1500 years closer to the time when it was written.

It's got to be a problem for those who study this stuff. One new sentence and all their interpretations can be considered garbage, specially considering that there's very few full poems from this particular poet, the The Lesbian.

"It is possible to imagine a distant future in which most other species of life are extinct but the ocean will consist overwhelmingly of immortal jellyfish, a great gelatin consciousness everlasting".
Nathaniel Rich
