Horizon Chase Turbo

Does anyone remember the Top Gear racing series (on SNES or Mega Drive, not sure which)? This game, developed by a studio in Brazil (it was apparently a raging success in that country... @JCamilo you ever played Top Gear?) were inspired enough to make an arcade racer of their own, and I gotta say they've done a terrific job.

Horizon features such diverse locations as Australia, Iceland and the UAE, amongst other places. I was thrilled to see three tracks set amongst Brighton beach.

I've seen reviews of this and if you didn't mention Top Gear, I sure as hell would.

Top Gear is one of my favourite games of all time, man. It was on the SNES. It didn't look especially amazing, even back then. But it played like a dream and zig-zagging to overtake cars felt so good! I had a blast with that game both in single player and with others.

I really wish they'd re-release it for new consoles.

Anyway, I think I'll get Horizon Chase Turbo just to relive the Top Gear times.

EDIT: Just did a search and it turns out I've mentioned Top Gear a number of times. I even recommended it to you, Jeff.

Nope, Jeff, the one console i ever owned was the old Atari and I despise car games.

I have to say this looks pretty much exactly like Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 from 30 years ago. Even the graphics are the same.

Not really sure how you can find that good TODAY. Back in the day (91) it was great though.

Lotus Turbo Challenge and Top Gear are by the same developer. Top Gear was for the SNES and Lotus was for Amiga/Genesis.

I've never played the Lotus games but I think Top Gear looks like it plays better. Non-stop action in terms of position changes (probably why they show the changes in the centre of the screen). I think it's better than Top Gear 2 as well, even though that game looks better graphically.

As for playing these games stoday, Top Gear may not look great but it still has a great fun factor, imo. Feels great when you flawlessly slalom like a champ past a ton of opponents, which is something that many other arcade racers didn't, couldn't and don't offer.

It plays beautifully. I don't play a lot of racers but this is a lot of fun. It's been getting lots of good reviews, too.

Firdy, I'm sorry I forgot your recommendation. My memory can be terrible sometimes. But I'm glad you're a Top Gear fan and I hope you dig this game.

My only complaint with this game is how easy it is to bump into opposing cars, especially at the start of races. Once you navigate your way through the pack, though, races become a lot more manageable.

Oh and it has a ripping soundtrack. Just electrifying, the kind to get your juices flowing for the high tempo races

Interesting.

But Amgia was unmatched in terms of graphic and sound those days. Too bad it died. Didn't need a sound or graphic card as well unlike PCs. Had it all internally.

Amiga just wasn't really popular outside of the UK...and Germany, I guess.

The Japanese were very aggressive in marketing their earlier consoles in the US and already won the war in that respect. Can't remember Amiga being marketed very extensively either.

Back then, I was in an American school in Belgium and I'd only hear about the Amiga in the British gaming magazines and from a couple of British classmates. Almost everyone had a NES for the previous console generation and the Sega Master System was again only really known by the Brits and a few European kids. @Nacka was a Master System kid (or Kidd), btw.

I think the main problem Amiga had was that many people who already had PCs weren't going to shell out for an Amiga because that would be doubling up while a console was different.

@Tigerheart : This just popped up in my Youtube recommendations. I was already subscribed to him and it looks like he's released this a couple of days ago for this convo.

I went from the Spectrum 48k via the Commodore 64 and Sega Master System to the Amiga 500. Good times!

I think my favorite games for the Amiga might have been KGB and Legend of Faerghail. Never finished either of them. The first one because it was insanely difficult and if you made an error early on it wouldn't let you know, it would just let you keep playing for hours and hours without letting you know that you had already ****ed it up. And Legend of Faerghail screwed me over due to its in-game copy protection, despite me actually having the original game some bug made it impossible for me to get past those pesky Elven guards wich prevented me from getting access to part of the game.

Huh? Now I watched the whole video and it ends with "the Amiga was on top" rather than "this is how Amiga died".

And because of this impertinence now I am upset and I will call it a day for today. After all it is already 3:40pm.

@Jeffrey , I completed the game earlier this month (100% for the World Tour, all golds for all Tournaments and Endurance events, etc.).

It's a very nice take on the Top Gear series. It won't blow anyone away but I had a lot of fun with this.

Like you said, the soundtrack is great. It was done by Barry Leitch who did the original Top Gear soundtrack and the Top Gear theme is actually one of the race tunes. Had a nostalgia rush the first time it came on.

The gameplay is similar but there were a few differences. One of the biggest differences was having fuel pickups instead of pit stops. This was fine but deciding when to pit (if ever) and how long to pit for was a really cool aspect of the Top Gear series.

I definitely had fun completing the game and I really hope they make a sequel.
