French Open 2018

I have a feeling this is going to be a pretty damn boring edition. Assuming no freak injuries, Nadal should win this one with ease. In fact, he can get the job done without dropping a set (didn't remember but this actually happened last season). His bracket has a lot of opponents that are terrible on this surface and all the better opponents are on the other half.

Looking forward to it. But it is definitely already decided on the men's side. Bar any big injury Nadal is going to be unstoppable.

Women seem wide open. The old guard might not really have it in them anymore (Williams + Sharapova) and it is pretty much a wild guess who's going to take it. Also Roland Garros has usually been the Grand Slam with the most unlikely winners in the women's tennis.

@Jeffrey : What's your take on Nishioka not being fit enough to outlast an old fart like Verdasco?

Guy's in cramps while Verdasco could probably continue for another two hours.

And seriously, wtf is Delbonis serve motion?
First time I noticed this. It's ridiculous.

This is why for me it's the worst GS. The only intrigue is to see how Djokovic progresses through the tournament, and a bit interesting to see how Thiem fares. Other than that, wake me up for Wimbledon.

Even already there has been upsets.

Nice story about Marco Trungelliti's 9 hour car journey from Barcelona to Paris with his brother, mother and grandmother.

Nishioka is considered a talent of sorts but he still plays challenger level sometimes.

Notable outs on the women's side: Venus and former champ Ostapenko. I suppose you can count Konta, Vesnina, Mladenovic (tho her form was shit last time I checked), Azarenka - though she hasn't been the same player for years.

What's Svitolina like on clay?

Nadal will win but Bolelli is up 3-0 in the third set, match to conclude later.

I think Svitolina is alright on sand. Had some problems in first round though. Also she lost a lot of credibility with me after I saw her ugly ass tattoo...

Btw. I know Serena got a child and all that but why is she playing in a burkini???

@Andy Christ Zopp had an impressive 5 set win against Jack Sock.

And just won another 5 setter. More importantly he can win the next round easily as he is facing a German.

Nadal-Gasquet= draw from heaven continues.
Marterer-Zopp= random entertainment.
Schwartzman-Coric= could go either way, I say it will be a five setter, lots of grinding, definite claycourt match material, I'll lean toward Coric surviving somehow

The rest are pretty random on this half.

Goffin-Monfils= lots of grinding in this one too?
Agut-Djokovic= Agut hasn't been the same player he used to be and Djokovic is starting to find form. I think Nole can get this done in 3 if he doesn't have a bad game.

SIDE NOTE: I've heard this Spanish kid Munar is touted as the next best thing from this part of the world. They compare him to Nadal. Maybe influence from Rafa's academy. I don't know. But anyways Spain is due a new player, a lot of these guys are old now and will retire sooner or later. I just hope some of these "Next Gens" actually translate. They've been plagued with inconsistency and injury-related problems. Chung for example missed this tournament with poor ankles.

I don't like the women's draw at all. ALL good players are in the top half. Bottom half is...

Marterer was somewhat impressive regardless of the loss. Good talent. I hope he keeps up the hard work. Kevin Anderson- Schwartzman lol a match of sizes, regardless style is more important on this surface. I expect Fognini to survive Cilic. Del Potro-Isner, both play well on clay but Potro should get it done. Djokovic is starting to get better with more tennis under his belt. Maybe he'll be ready by Wimbledon. I hope him and Thiem can have a trilogy rematch.

Great match by Cecchinato.

Djokovic not back to his best but much better than for a long time.

The winner of Thiem-Cecchinato will have a day rest before taking on the winner of the other side. The rain delay has made things even more interesting.

Nadal-Thiem final Sunday. Thiem is going to have to up his game big time. Missed some easy shots and volleys against Cecchinato.
