Bits of brilliance - Gundi

Here's a video I made from collected materials about Georgi Asparuhov. It is quite long - about 15 minutes, but I guarantee you it is worth seeing every single second of it.

excellent collection pe3

I still remember my father telling me how he was going to all Botev home games just to watch Gundi play. And my dad is a Spartak Plovdiv fan - the old one of Diev abd Co.

Decades later we were doing the same with my friends (Botev but also Levski and CSKA fans) to watch Gibi

such a shame he never went to a big european team.
He could have been a legend in european football.
he is still a legend but it leaves us wondering what MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Yes. while watching it I was thinking the same. There were several BG player of that period I think that were runured to be wanted by Euro giants - Gundi, Penev, Jakimov, Diev. May be others too. See what happened with the few Eastern Europe greats that left for west like Puskas and others. May be none of them would be another Puskas, but Gundi and few others could have been great stars. We will never know.

yes i think if he went to play for some western names he would have defenetly be mentioned in the same breath as puskas but at least we had our own legend playing at our own league and filling our own stadiums so there are some positives.

Penev you mean? Or Gundi? There are sever rumours about that. I remember my dad claiming that Todor Diev refused an offer from Santos after a tour of the team in Brazil I think. Santos with Pele at that point. Then I remember ppl claiming Penev had a solid offer from Milan or Inter. I am sure Gundi had offers too, but how proven all that is?

Don't you know Gundi's most famous words? When Levski played with Milan the Milan's coach Nereo Rocco said for the Italian media about Gundi “Il centravanti dei miei sogni”(the center forward of my dreams). After the game in Milano the president of Milan and several other officials from AC Milan were waiting for him in his hotel room. His wife was translating. According to her, they offered him and his family status of a political refugees and all kinds of protections + 300 000 dollars only for him to sign(not a salary). His salary was supposed to be 2000 dollars per week, 600 dollars per game he plays + apartment + car, etc. luxuries. I do not know if you can imagine what kind of money that was in 67-68... Then after thinking just for several minutes, he said to his wife "Tell them... that there is a country named Bulgaria, and in this country there is a team named Levski. They might not have heard of it before this game but I was born in this team and I will die there"... Ironically 4 years later he really dies

He couldn't have said (only) that since he became a complete player only in Botev Plovdiv hence, his wife surely dropped the Botev reference when telling the story later on.
