Six injured in soccer violence
From correspondents in Sofia, Bulgaria
September 13, 2005
SIX police were injured and 77 fans arrested following clashes during a Bulgarian league match at the weekend between fans from city rivals CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia.
"Sixty-nine supporters of Levski and eight fans of CSKA were detained for grave offences against public order, breaking stadium seats and involvement in street fights," a police spokesperson said.
"Six policemen were injured in the accident, including one who suffered concussion and remains in hospital."
The violence erupted at half-time and continued outside the stadium after the match between league champions CSKA and Bulgarian Cup holder Levski, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Under Bulgarian law, the arrested fans risk fines and jail terms of up to 25 days.
The arrests sparked protests Monday by Levski's executive board.
"Police action has edged on mob-law revenge," the club said in a letter to Interior Minister Rumen Petkov, calling for the case to be investigated.
But Mr Petkov told the state BTA news agency: "Police action was totally adequate. No democratic state can tolerate vandalism."
