Let the descrption king step in

This is the game Australians live to die for. Picture 100,000 screaming fans at the MCG on Grand Final day. The rivalries, the passion, the excitement, it's Aussie Rules football, one of the most explosive games in the world. From the individual state leagues to the AFL itself, discuss the teams, players, coaches, controversies and anything else related to the great game

Damn it is way too long we have to shorten it a bit.

I like it Geroge but I think we should also keep the "One of the most explosive games in the world" bit somewhere in there

shouldn't you mention that is Australians in the southern states that live AFL to die for

Since AFL is still not huge here in Sydney and even Brisbane despite their success (i think the Broncos are still much bigger there). Obviously still bigger than RL in the southern states though (despite Melbourne winning the comp a few years ago)

We wouldn't want to mislead out international AFL virgins now would be

You have to remember that they are both one-town teams

I don't really know about the crowd figures of the Broncos but it is hard to compare since they play at different grounds and ANZ stadium is out in the sticks and the stands are about a million miles away from the ground

There are several RL teams in Sydney like there are AFL teams in Melbourne but Sydney also has to compete with Union (not so much in terms of crowds....of which Union at club level don't get much......but in the sense that unlike AFL which encompasses and targets people from the whole socioeconomic spectrum, Union is friends with private schools and upper middle and upper class Sydney and Brisbane while league has more of a stronghold in the working class areas

All things considered though Melbourne (and i guess Adelaide and Perth as well) do get better crowds than Sydney and have done for a while and i can't explain why??????

u mean one-team towns

statistically the broncos draw abt high teens the lions draw abt 25 or so, and brisbane only have 2 teams in the NRLdont they?

abt sydney fair enuff, but still the swannies draw bigger than ure most popular club which is quite an achievement for the AFL.

Melbourne has 10 teams, the poorest drawing side the kangaroos still draw abt 20,000 per game on average

I guess u lot have ure harbour bridges and ure constant promotion of the city and how good u are and we down here have our sport

Going by ticket-sales and television ratings it is the most popular spectator sport in oz ...

So ...

There's an old saying that the dog that barks loudest never bites. They did a lot of barking but we bit them pretty hard. Uruguay's attitude just showed how scared they were of us - it was their last resort."
