A few AFL newbie question

Hope you don't mind me askin, I see this sport a lot on sky sports and whilst a lot of rules can be picked up simply by watching the game, there are some which are not so easy.

1) What are the rules for scoring? I know that it must go through 2 posts, but must it go through before the first bounce or can it bounce as often as it needs to?
And what are the points scored for putting a kick through the posts?

2) Are there any rules for passing the ball at all? Or can you use feet, hands to through it backward, forwards etc.?

Ah hehehehe

1) 6 points if kicked through the big posts from a person in your team, if the opposition kicks it through under pressure, that is only one point. Bounces etc - irrelevant in the game.

2) You can pass it backwards or forwards, but only by kicking or hand, where you must use a handball motion. If you catch the ball that is kicked, and have travelled further than 15 meters, you may claim a mark (where you get to go back and take your time) or play on.

how strange it is to be anything at all

what you say about claiming a "mark" do you mean that the player who caught it can go back to the place where the ball was kicked to him?

Yes, wherever they take the mark they can go back and look for another option to give the ball to, and they also have the option to "play on" when they've taken a mark.

Also, is there any significance that the large half circles around the posts have?

The large half circles around the posts are the 50 metre lines, which are significant as far as rules are concerned, they are basically there for stats and viewing purposes.
