Teams: Australia & Newcastle United
Hey crushproof, welcome to the AFL forum!
In all honesty the vast majority of AFL fans see IR as novelty value only. The reason being that with the exception of the behind posts and the allowance of the tackle rule, the game is essentially Gaelic Football with no similarity to our game whatsoever.
I went to the game in Adelaide (the tie) when the series was ressurected a few years ago and enjoyed it and I always try to watch the games on TV when we tour Ireland, but to me the hybrid game isn't a patch on our natural code - and I'm sure there'd be many GAA fans who feel the same in regard to theirs, no?
"They picked on the wrong man - and the wrong country. It was like pouring petrol onto a fire as far as I was concerned.
There's an old saying that the dog that barks loudest never bites. They did a lot of barking but we bit them pretty hard. Uruguay's attitude just showed how scared they were of us - it was their last resort."
