FIBA World Cup 2014

group draw was made:

Group A: Spain (No. 2), France (No. 8), Brazil (No. 10), Serbia (No. 11), Iran (20), Egypt (46)

Group B: Argentina (No. 3), Greece (No. 5), Croatia (No. 16), Puerto Rico (No. 17), Philippines (No. 34), Senegal (No. 41)

Group C: United States (No. 1), Turkey (No. 7), New Zealand (No. 19), Dominican Republic (No. 26), Finland (No. 39), Ukraine (No. 45)

Group D: Lithuania (No. 4), Australia (No. 9), Slovenia (No. 13), Angola (No. 15), Mexico (No. 24), South Korea (no. 31)

the overall field is surprisingly weak. Russia, Italy, Germany and China apparently retracted their wild card bids.

The wild card teams were Finland, Brazil, Greece and Turkey. The wild cards went to the highest bidder: http://sports.nationalpost.com/2014/...ip-canada-out/

seems like a pathetic FIBA fundraising tournament as expected. the especially unfortunate thing is that they try to force the Eurobasket to be held in every 4 years because of it.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

games start in late August

USA will have a strong team:

Krzyzewski and Colangelo both noted, however, that Team USA will not be at full, superstar-laden strength for the FIBA World Cup. James, Paul, and Anthony will not compete in 2014 by the program’s own choice, as Krzyzewski noted that non-Olympic competition is a prime opportunity for younger players. All three are nonetheless included on the program roster due to interest on both sides in their involvement for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Krzyewski also acknowledged the possibility that players like Williams and Chandler — who have dealt with nagging injuries this season — may be off the board for 2014.

Regardless, the team should still be in good hands in the interim. Durant and Love have both publicly committed to playing in the FIBA World Cup this summer, while Colangelo said that Aldridge is also looking to make the 2014 team. Should Westbrook or Rose be healthy enough to participate, they, too might flesh out a roster that would enter the World Cup as heavy favorites. A hypothetical 12-man roster might include:

Guard: Curry, Williams, Westbrook, Lillard
Wing: Durant, George, Harden, Iguodala
Big: Love, Howard, Aldridge, Davis

Iran will be lucky to get one of those games. I think historically we've only defeated one European team at an official game and that was Ireland many decades back. Well with that said Group A looks the most interesting on paper.
