CL MATCHDAY1: Atletico vs JUVE

🏟 Metropolitano
⏰ 21:00 CEST

Having mixed feelings about this, after the relatively good performances in the first 2 rounds of Serie A, along came the International Week and that horrible performance against Fiorentina in Florence and all the injuries that came with it.... I really don't know what to expect from the team tonight

Berna had a perfect match against Atletico last season but I'm not sure if he can repeat that performance again... Cristiano has scored 25 goals against Atletico, hopefully he can a couple more tonight... good to see Pjanic has recovered from his injury and is back with the team, can't say that about Costa who will miss at least 2 weeks...

Joao Felix is having a blistering start to his Atletico career and seems to be fitting in nicely... but Griezmann was very influential to Atletico where he was directly involved in 54% of Atletico's goals...

Meanwhile, Leverkusen play L. Moscow in the other group match

Not having Sarri on the bench and with the team due to illness has taken a toll i think on the team's ability to adapt to his way of doing things.

What worries me is whether we can contain Joao Felix defensively, especially when we've looked pretty vulnerable so far at the back and De Ligt in particular has struggled quite a bit since his transfer.

A draw would be a good result.

Interestingly the team played better when he wasn't on the bench (vs Parma and Napoli), but I agree with you

We shipped 3 goals against Napoli at home, it was hardly a vintage performance, neither was the win versus Parma.

It's expected we'd have some difficulties with the process of adaptation but the CL can be unforgiving in the group stage, and we have a reasonably strong group.

We need to hit the ground running as much as possible.

True but we still scored 4 goals, which should've been more with Khedira's 2 missed chances... I very much prefer that over an atrocious 0-0 with no game plan, snail speed build-up and literally 0 chances over 90 minutes

The first half looked comfortable (looked like we were playing at home) thanks to Atletico's tactics of being pinned so far back and counting on the counter attacks that weren't very threatening... Higuain looked lost and ineffective in attack, Cuadrado is a huge step down from D. Costa, despite good movements, the end product always comes short... would love to watch Dybala and Ramsey come in during the 2nd half, hopefully adding more attacking threat and creating more chances... in reality we will probably see Berna and Rabiot come in

Once again, we are absolutely atrocious defending set pieces.

If the reason why we couldn't win the CL previously was because our defense buckled in key games in the latter stages, now that defensive frailty has become even more prevalent, and Sarri has never been a good coach defensively which worries me even about our ability to fix these issues.

So typical, the only 2 players whom I criticize in my post end up combining to score a wonder goal

This was a huge improvement compared to the Fiorentina match in terms of movements and creating chances, it is not easy to play at the Wanda Metropolitano and getting away with 3 points would've been a huge boost, but unfortunately defending set pieces was yet again our downfall... Hopefully with more time this will be rectified during the season, and Sarri would need to give this more urgency during training sessions instead of his obsession with attacking drills involving all players...

I guess Atletico gave us too much respect until we went 2-0 up when they finally woke up and starting threatening our goal (almost looked like they were coached by Allegri, being more reactive than proactive)....

Anyway, taking a draw isn't a bad result with a win at home hopefully top spot can be secured, Moscow beating Leverkusen away raised a few eyebrows but watching the goals I thought Leverkusen were very poor defensively and only scored from an own goal, early days but it doesn't look good for the Germans...

On a separate note, watching Atalanta crumble in their first ever CL match was sad to see, hopefully they recover in the remaining matches of the group....
