In April 2009, Zaki failed to return from Egypt's World Cup Qualifier, leading his club manager Steve Bruce to describe him as the most unprofessional player he had ever worked with. Zaki has been fined for this incident. Returning late from international duty has made Steve Bruce so angry he has publicly branded Zaki "highly unprofessional" forcing Bruce to fine Zaki the maximum amount on more than one occasion. But Bruce said it doesn't seem to do anything to change his poor behaviour. Bruce also stated that "Before this latest incident, Zaki had already been fined considerably more than the average person in Britain earns in a year and he will now face another heavy fine.
