The Saudi Football thread

Saudi League History:

Up until the late seventies, football in Saudi Arabia was organised on a regional basis, with the only nationwide tournament being the King's Cup. In 1976, it was deemed that local football, and transportation links, have improved sufficiently to organise a national league. Hence the Saudi League was launched with 8 clubs participating.

In 1981 it was decided to increase the number of clubs and add a second division. The league competition for the 1981/1982, known as the ranking league, featured 18 clubs with the top eight qualifying for the first division and the bottom ten to the new second division. The number of first division clubs was later increased to 12 in the 1984/1985 season.

In 1990 it was decided to revamp local competitions and to introduce professional football. A new league championship was formed called "The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques League Cup", which was a two stage championship. The first stage was a regular double round-robin league competition with the top 4 qualifying to the final knockout stage, called the golden square. Clubs were allowed to sign players on a professional basis making the league semi professional.

In 2007 It was decided to split the two stages, with the league reverting to a standard double round-robin competition, and a new domestic competition cup competition formed called "The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques Champions Cup". This cup will feature the top six finishers in the league plus the winners of the Crown Prince Cup and the Prince Faisal Cup. This format will take effect from the 2007/2008 season onwards.

Just out of interest: Al Wahda is a team from Mecca but they have a Dutch coach. I thought non-muslims were not allowed to enter the city. Has the coach converted before taking the job or is there an exceptional entrance to the city for the staff and players of the local football club.

PS: "The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques Champions Cup" is a great name for a cup!

both the training ground and the stadium are in the outskirts of the city, which are technically outside the sanctuary zone.

Latest results:

Ittihad 1-1 Watani
This was surprisingly the top of table fixture in the league! Ittihad went ahead through Keita but Watani equalised deep in injury time.

Qadessia 2-5 Shabab
Bani Qades must feel very aggrieved. They went into half time commanding a 2-0 lead, but the second half was a disaster. Qadessia had two players sent off, which gave Shabab the numerical advantage to turn it round. Oh and 3 of Shabab's goals were penalties, two of which were controversial.

I didn't see the game, but it stinks to high heaven

Sure, after Ittihad drew with Watani, Hilal can catch up if they win every game in hand. Logically the game between them will most likely decide who leads the league at the midseason break. But it's still early days.

Al Nassr Interested in Musaed Nada

Some of the honorary Members of Al-Nasr Club ordered getting Musaed Nada the Qadisiyah Kuwait team player which participated last season in recent weeks, especially as the coach was impressed By the player having watched him some participants to be found swap for Almrdasi

The Team coach Fuki Boy:

The transaction is expected to receive acceptance from Talal al-Fahad, President of the Kuwaiti-Qadissiya Club, which was responsive quickly with the club loan for Nada last season and the team continue the search for the most prominent players in the professional football most importantly the Colombian Ferreira who playes Atletico Parananise in Brazil and the only obstacle facing the deal is the high cost contract

today your NT will play against Estonia. Any links where this match could be watched online?

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? AndÖ.itís the football, thatís the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

I'm surprised that Nero hasn't yet posted in this thread.

"I went to a football school 60 miles away from where I lived. I practised 12 hours a day, training both feet so thoroughly, that I no longer know which is better. At Sparta Prague, I would retake the field after a match and train until the floodlights were extinguished."

It's a shame their aren't more fans of the Saudi league on XT. I like Al-Ittihad myself, and I've really become a big fan of the AFC Champions League.
