Anybody following this? It is a football version of the many "reality" shows that are mushrooming on TV lately. Basically, they held trials for young amateur players in various arab cities and picked a shortlist of 25 to make it to the academy. Once in the academy, 6 will be voted out each week, until only 1 remains. The winner spends a year at Newcastle United.

Anyway, we're down to 19, after the first round of evictions took place on Sunday. I'm glad to say that 3 Saudis are still there.

The hopefuls:

Bahrain-

Mahmoud Abdulrahman

Khaled al-Dilmi

Mohammed Abdulgader

Saudi-

Ahmad Kirinshi

Omar Saad

Abdulrahman Bokhari

Egypt-

Mohammed al-Jabbas

Islam Abdulaziz

Syria-

Awjad Farid

Morroco-

Abdullah Dira

UAE-

Ayoub Omar

Lebanon-

Ali Lila

Algeria-

Bouzaid Amin

Jama'at Mahfouz

Sayeh Walid

Sadoug al-Haj

Kuwait-

Mobarak al-Shamali

Iraq-

Hassan Ismail

al-Amir Haidar

Which channel shows this show, and when did it start?

I'm surprised I haven't heard about it until now!

Suprisingly, it seems very few of them think combing one's hair is a necessary part of their daily routine. Ali Lila from Lebanon looks like he just got out of bed and went to the photo shoot...

Ah to be young.

He is Saudi. We're not Qatar! There are a lot of Saudis of Javanese origin, and they've been there for centuries.

Saudis are actually quite ethnically diverse, particularly in Hijaz and that's because it's been the economic hub of the country for ages and trade has in turn brought many people who have stayed on and integrated into society. I know several Saudis of various ancestry from the Far East including Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, etc, as well as numerous from African, South Asian and European descent.

We're not all bedouins.

Interesting Nero, I was under the impression (from other Arabs, would you believe it?) that a Saudi only marries another Saudi (as if marrying someone of another race is discouraged). It's good to read from an authentic source that counters such claims.

Well it depends, there are Saudis who are ethnocentric and will only marry with other Saudis, and there are those who won't even marry outside of their own tribe.

But there are also many Saudis who marry a variety of people from different ethnic backgrounds as well, Jeddah has one of the most cosmopolitan populations in the world and when you see Saudis here, you'll notice they vary greatly in terms of appearance. There are many people here who are half-Saudi and half-something else.

The whole notion that Saudi Arabia is a homogenous country is false. The country has great regional variations. The cities of the Hijaz (Mecca, Medina, Jiddah, Yanbu, Taif) are all very cosmopolitan (and for many centuries). People of immigrant ancestry are the majority there!

What I find ironic is that the top player will end up with Newcastle...playing in the Championship!

Don't lament the treachery of time;
long have dogs danced over the carcasses of lions.

Don't suppose that their dancing raises them above their masters;
for dogs remain dogs, and lions remain lions.

Insult me as you wish;
For my silence to the depraved is a response.

It's not that I have no response, but;
A lion does not reply to a dog.
