The Toronto Lynx were eliminated from the 2002 A-League playoffs in a stunning turn of events Friday evening. A Toronto Lynx 0-0 tie with Atlanta combined with a Charlotte Eagle upset 3-1 win over the Rochester Raging Rhinos has left the Lynx out of the postseason, scheduled to start next weekend.
In a tense match played in front of a large, raucous crowd at Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke on Fan Appreciation Night, the Lynx were unable to convert numerous chances and find the back of the net. From the mid-point of the second half until the end of overtime, wave after wave of Lynx attack was thwarted by the Silverback defense, and the Lynx forwards were unable to finish the many chances they were presented.
The Lynx best opportunity to score came midway through the second half when Niki Budalic was denied by Silverbacks 'keeper Jeff Cassar after a flurry of action inside the Atlanta 18-yard box. Midfielder Nikki Vignjevic also shot the ball over the bar from the edge of the crease on a 2-on-1 minutes later to keep the score level.
The tie left the Lynx with a record of 10-13-5, good for 48 points. Charlotte finished the season 10-14-4, for 50 points, two points ahead of the Lynx. While the Lynx had a better record on the season, Charlotte accumulated 6 bonus points over the course of the season, while the Lynx were only able to muster 3 bonus points. A bonus point is scored each time a team records three goals in a match.
