Canada's Olympic Men's Team

Now that our Gold Cup glories are behind us and the World Cup remains just a dream, the next big event to look forward to is the 2004 Olympics.

The Olympic men's team has already started training camp in Mexico, and will play some friendlies this week against local teams.

They will get together again in May in Fort Lauderdale and in June they will play a couple of games with a Caribbean or Central American team.

The present training squad is for the North American based players (not the likes of Tam Nsaliwa, Wyn Belotte, Julian de Guzman, Terry Dunfield, Chris Pozniak, etc.). Here's the list - see anyone you recognize?

Goalkeepers:
Pieter Meuleman (Wilfrid Laurier University)
Dennis Kindel (Simon Fraser)
Alim Karim (PSA Toronto)

Defenders:
Adam Braz (Montreal Impact)
Kye Taylor
Mathieu Savaria (Fairleigh Dickinson-USA)
Rocco Placentino (Montreal Impact)
Gaspare Borsellino (Montreal Impact)
Chris Williams (University of Mobile-USA)

Midfielders:
Gordon Chin
Vikram Kaushal
Atiba Hutchinson
Justin Thompson (Fairfield-USA),

Forwards:
Chris Lemire (Calgary Storm)
Olivier Occean (South Connecticut St.-USA)
Michael Brkich
Rob Friend (UC-Santa Barbara-USA)

Canada’s Olympic Team lost their first game of training camp 2-1 against Tecos, a Mexican first division team. The Canadian team created their share of chances but unfortunately was unable to convert.

Canada’s lone goal came from Olivier Occean in the 82nd minute. The two Mexican goals came in the 66th and 75th minute scored by Adolfo Bautista and Arturo Metlach, respectively.

Canada’s Men’s Olympic team has redeemed themselves in the second match of the 2002 season defeating Chivas, a second division Mexican team, 3-1.

It was another competitive game for Canada. Canada did not show well in the first half, but came out strong in the second half to score 2 goals.

Canada’s goals came from Gaspare Borsellino on a penalty shot in the 22nd minute and Kye Taylor in the 61st minute. Gordon Chin finished of the scoring late in the game in the 85th minute. Julio Gomez scored the lone goal for Chivas two minutes after Borsellino’s goal.

Canada Falls 1-0 To Honduras In Final Minute

Under a steady rain in Siguatepeque, Honduras, Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team fell 1-0 to a last minute winner in front of roughly 1,000 vocal Honduran fans.

Both teams traded chances throughout the 90 minutes but in the end, a header off a corner in the 89th minute proved the difference in an entertaining friendly played in difficult conditions.

"We lost tonight to a good Honduran team, but to be fair the result could have gone either way," said Canadian head coach Bruce Twamley. "We certainly have a lot of work to do but I was encouraged with what I saw this evening."

NBC has just announced a big increase in the amount of U.S. TV coverage of the 2004 Olympics.

Hopefully this will translate into more Olympic soccer coverage for Canadians as well.

Canada will be playing the US Virgin Islands in the first round of Olympic qualifying.

Hmmm.... I wonder what city in Canada will host this match?

Sita-Taty Matondo

This guy is currently on trial in Graz/Austria, so I wanted to ask for some information about him. All I could find is that he is a midfielder, born in 1984 and member of Canada's Olymic Team. Is there anything more to say?

Thanks in advance!

And btw: Richard Hastings lost his place in the squad. I doubt that he will get much playing time this season.

Matondo is a member of the U-20 Team that has qualified for the FIFA World Youth Championship to be held in the United Arab Emirates (war permitting) in a month's time. He scored a goal in a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago a week ago, but other than that, I'm not aware of his having scored for the team.

Matondo made his debut for the Canadian Olympic team May 30, 2002 in a friendly against Honduras, which Honduras won 1-0. He has since played in two Olympic friendlies against the USA in Florida, December 19 and 21, 2002, in which he scored one of Canada's 2 goals.

He has played one game with the senior men's side, appearing in Canada's 4-0 loss to the USA in a friendly on January 18, 2003.

I'm not aware of any club team affiliation.

I've never seen him play, so I can't say if he's any good.

----------------
Rotten news about Hastings!

I can't imagine that Matondo will secure a place with GAK if even Hastings can't hold one.
