Canada - Switzerland

Ottawa, Ontario - The Canadian Soccer Association today announced its Men's World Cup Team will play Switzerland in a full international friendly on May 15, 2002 in Switzerland. The site of the game will be announced in the near future.

The game in May will mark the first time the two countries have faced each other at the senior national level. Switzerland finished fourth in Group 1 in World Cup Qualifying, behind Russia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia. Their final qualifying game was on October 6, 2001 when they lost 4-0 to group winners Russia. Switzerland will face Sweden on March 27 prior to facing Canada.

That's it? One lousy game between the Gold Cup and the World Cup?

Surely we can find more European countries willing to let us play on their turf.

Would be nicer to play a country that has qualified for the WC, wouldn't it?

I doesn't matter who the opposition is. We won't get to see it over here.

No I don't think we can find many European teams to play us on their own turf.

If you'll all remember, when we had the training camp in Germany a while back, the only friendly we could arrange was against Northern Ireland.

Since the teams are preparing for the world cup, you'd think at least a couple of them would want to play us as preparation, but I think they've all set their schedules already and we're not on the list.

We all know big European club teams frown upon international friendlies. It makes the situation worse when the friendly is on another continent and involves quite a bit of travelling. Remember France-Australia a few months back? I think this is one of the reasons a lot of good national sides may be reluctant to come to Canada to play us.

While it's true that no clubs will want to come here to play us that isn't what I was on about. I was basically saying that it doesn't matter who we are playing, the likelihood of it being televised over here is pretty low. I doubt very much we'll see the game against Switzerland on Sportsnet.

Yup

I agree with the K-Man. There's just no way that the match will be shown on Sportsnet. It might even conflict with the Champions League Final.

Sad enough as it is, most people would rather watch that.

Does it really sadden you to think that more people would rather watch the Champions League final than a friendly between Canada and Switzerland?

I know which I'd choose if I had to, and it wouldn't be the Canada game.

The Champion's League Final vs a mere friendly against Switzerland?

Jarrek, you're right, more people would want to watch the CL final....rightfully so.

Friendlies are meaningless and usually boring....

There will be no TV coverage of this match in Canada, not even on a tape delay basis. :fero:

This may be the only friendly Canada plays this year.

Canada won the game 3-1. Tomasz Radzinski hit a brace around a strike by Paul Stalteri. Congo-born Blaise N'Kufo salvaged some pride for the Swiss by scoring a consolation goal late in the game.

Canada finally wins a game and we can't see it on TV!

Last time Canada scored more than 2 goals in a game was January 10, 1996 against Honduras (3-1).

Right, it was Panama, August 30, 1996 (3-1).

And yes, Marek, it is a pathetic statistic.

pathetic is correct. 57 matches, cant get over that. Radzinski looks like the man now though, i think Canada will qualify for WC 2006, Wyn Bellote should be "ready" by then!
