Canada in CONCACAF Gold Cup

Canada announces preliminary roster for Gold Cup
Men's National Team 31 May 2013

Canada's Men's National Team has announced its 35-man preliminary roster for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup to take place 7-28 July in USA.

Canada will have to trim its roster to 23 players before entering the tournament.

The team will take part in a 10-day training camp in Oxnard, CA ahead of the tournament.

Canada will kick-off the Gold Cup on 7 July against Martinique in Pasadena, CA; will then travel to Seattle, WA for an 11 July fixture against Mexico; and will then close-out the group stage with a match against Panama in Denver, CO on 14 July.

The top two teams from each group; as well as the two highest-seeded third-place finishers will advance to the knock-out stages.

Canada won the Gold Cup in 2000 and has since succeeded in making it to the tournament semi-finals on two other occasions (2002, 2007); and made it to the quarter-finals in 2009.

All of Canada's matches at the tournament will be broadcast on Sportsnet. CanadaSoccerTV will also be on-site at all venues providing additional coverage.

FULL CANADA ROSTER

Goalkeepers (3): Milan Borjan (Sivasspor/Turkey), Lars Hirschfeld (Vĺlerenga/Norway), Simon Thomas (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).

Defenders (6): Nik Ledgerwood (Hammarby/Sweden), Adam Straith (unattached), Doneil Henry (Toronto FC), Ashtone Morgan (Toronto FC), Marcel de Jong (Augsburg/Germany), David Edgar (Burnley/England).

Midfielders (9): Kyle Bekker (Toronto FC), Julian de Guzman (unattached), Issey Nakajima-Farran (Alki/Cyprus), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Samuel Piette (Fortuna Dusseldorf/Germany), Keven Aleman (Real Valladolid/Spain), Will Johnson (Portland Timbers), Pedro Pacheco (Santa Clara/Portugal), Russell Teibert (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).

Forwards (4): Randy Edwini-Bonsu (unattached), Marcus Haber (Stevenage FC/England), Tosaint Ricketts (Sandnes Ulf/Norway), Simeon Jackson (unattached).

And this was the lineup in Canada's 1-1 draw with PDL team Ventura County (that's 4th division):

Milan Borjan; Nik Ledgerwood, David Edgar, Doneil Henry, Marcel de Jong; Julian de Guzman, Will Johnson (c); Tosaint Ricketts, Kyle Bekker, Russell Teibert; Marcus Haber.

Decent lineup IMO. Canada has nothing up front though in terms of strikers. Teibert most definitely interests me.

Is Oliver Occean not allowed to play?

He'd have started up front if he was there

Lex Immers - Pace & power. Holland's #1 box to box player

Feyenoord forum - the place to talk about this phenomenon

Occean sucks. I've only seen him play a couple of times, but he's awful. I also see on Wiki he's 31. Canada is getting rid of their older players (Occean it seems, De Rosario, Bernier) and going with youth (Teibert, Bekker, Osorio, Henry, Morgan, etc).

Like I said eariler, Canada's strikers are shit. Jackson is shit as well, but I suppose at least one veteran is needed. Honestly, I don't know anything about the other strikers that haev been called in. Canada's main threats will come from Teibert and Will Johnson, though due to Canada's lack of experience, I could see Johnson playing a more defensive role (kinda like Michael Bradley does with the US, he can get forward but he usually is forced to sit back). Johnson has been amazing for Portland this season.

Canada 0 Martinique 1

:eekani:

Wow. Pretty awful result for Canada. Don't really know what to say. Judging from the highlights, it could have been a three of four goal defeat shockingly.

Floro would change his mind watching that. Lots of works to do and starts with one word: scouting. Lots more of it.

Canada have a lot of work to do, even making the 2018 qualifying hex would be a minor miracle...their player pool is simply too weak, the fact that they have been using out of contract players in their NT for the past few months says it all

The only thing shit is the above quote. Typical MLS fanboy stuff. You say you've only seen Occean a few times but he's awful, always good to criticize without knowledge.

Apparently, Eintracht Braunschweig of the Bundesliga don't share your opinion on Simeon Jackson

I think any more insight would be redundant

After crashing out of World Cup qualifying last year, Canada outdid that dismal performance again this year by failing to score a goal in three matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
