Canada M20 names roster for pre-tournament camp in Mexico
Men's U-20 Team5 February 2013

Canada’s Men’s U-20 team has announced its 23-player roster for a training camp in Mexico City, Mexico which will run from 11 to 16 February ahead of the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico which will take place from 18 February to 2 March.

The four highest-placing teams at the CONCACAF Championship will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013 in June.

“It will be a difficult tournament,” said U-20 Head Coach Nick Dasovic.

“Our goal for now is to make it to the quarter-final match which will give us a one-off chance to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in June.

“Whether we enter the match as a first or second seed from our group, we will deal with that.”

To qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Canada will need to finish in either first or second place in Group B that also includes Cuba and Nicaragua. If the Canadians are successful in qualifying for the knock-out stages they will feature in a quarter-final match-up against a team from Group A with a spot at Turkey 2013 on the line.

Dasovic stated that his team will be buoyed by an increased number of players playing in professional environments both at home and abroad, but also cautioned that in the same way that Canada has improved its player development structure in recent years – the same can be said about many of the competing nations.

“The strength of the squad is helped by the professional club academies in Canada and by the fact that we have a number of players on the squad that play in Europe,” said Dasovic.

“But at the same time, we need to realize that as we get better – all of our competition is getting better as well."

Canada will begin the tournament on 18 February with a clash against Cuba, before taking on Nicaragua on 22 February.

Should Canada qualify for the knock-out stages, the all-important quarter-final match would take place on 26 February.

All matches at the competition will be played at either the Estadio Cuauhtemoc or the Estadio Olimpico de C.U. in Puebla.

All tournament matches will be streamed live on CONCACAF.com. On-site coverage of the CONCACAF Championship will also be provided on CanadaSoccerTV.

Canada will need to trim its roster down to 20 players ahead of the CONCACAF Championship.

Canada names roster for CONCACAF U-20
John Molinaro Sportsnet.ca February 16, 2013

Nick Dasovic has selected the 20 young men he will put his trust in to help lead Canada to glory in Mexico.

Dasovic, coach of Canada’s under-20 men’s team, announced on Saturday his 20-player roster for the upcoming CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Three players were trimmed from the squad after Dasovic held a five-day preparatory training camp in Mexico City earlier this week. Vancouver Whitecaps captain Bryce Alderson didn’t make the team because of an injury, while defender Jordan Murrell and forward Yassin Essa were cut.

Two players on this roster -- Doneil Henry and Samuel Piette -- have played for Canada's senior side and featured for the Canadian under-23 team at last year's CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament.

The CONCACAF U-20 Championship runs Feb. 18 to March 2 in Puebla, Mexico. The four semi-finalists at the 12-nation tournament will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled for June in Turkey.

In Mexico, Canada will compete in Group B alongside Cuba and Nicaragua. The top two teams in the round robin group advance to the quarter-finals. Canada begins group play by facing Cuba on Feb. 18, before taking on Nicaragua four days later.

Group A features the United States, Costa Rica and Haiti. Group C is made up of Jamaica, Panama and Puerto Rico. Defending CONCACAF champion Mexico, El Salvador and Curacao will compete in Group D. If Canada makes it out of the group stage, it will play a team from Group A in the quarter-finals.

“I watched Nicaragua play in a tournament in Honduras where they beat Honduras. They are no slouches. They are legitimate,” Dasovic recently told reporters.

Canada hasn't played at the FIFA U-20 World Cup since it hosted the event in 2007.

After Canada failed to qualify for the last two U-20 World Cups in 2009 and 2011, the pressure is squarely on Dasovic's shoulders this time around.

“It is about winning,” Dasovic said. “We need to go in with an idea that we're not going to go there to make up the numbers. We're going there to win games.”

He later added: “I take a lot of pressure as a coach, absolutely.”

Canada wins, books place in quarter-final at CONCACAF U-20
FIFA U-20 World Cup 22 February 2013

Canada is now one win away from qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013.

The Canadian U-20's powered to a 5:1 win over Nicaragua on Friday 22 February in the team's final group stage match of the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship at the Estadio Univeristario BUAP in Puebla, Mexico.

Canada will now do battle with rivals USA in the quarter-finals on Tuesday 26 February with a place at Turkey 2013 on the line.

Canada got off the mark early with a delightful first-time strike by Samuel Piette in the 6th minute.

Caleb Clarke then added Canada's second before Mauro Eustaquio converted from the spot to put Canada three goals clear within 40 minutes.

Nicaragua's Cristian Guttierez was sent off on the play leading to Eustaquio's goal, putting his team in further trouble and Canada took advantage adding another two goals en-route to a resounding 5:1 victory.

Clarke scored his second of the game early in the second half before substitute Ben McKendry chipped in with Canada's fifth goal of the night.

"We got the result we wanted in the first half," said Head Coach Nick Dasovic.

"When we went up 3:0 and they went down to 10 men they were up against it. Our boys did well to capitalize on the opportunities we created."

Canada will now take on USA in what is certain to be a hotly-contested one-off match to determine which side will come away with one of the four CONCACAF spots at the FIFA U-20 World Cup to take place in June and July in Turkey.

"It will be a special match as part of the Canada-USA rivalry," said Dasovic.

"I'm sure they will be up for it just as much as we are."
