Charleston To Welcome Whitecaps
Vancouver to compete in 2013 Carolina Challenge Cup

Charleston, S.C. -- Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC have committed to play in the 2013 Carolina Challenge Cup to be held at Blackbaud Stadium, Charleston, S.C., February 16-23, 2013. Whitecaps FC will join Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire and USL PRO’s Charleston Battery for the round-robin tournament with one more MLS team still to be announced.

This will be the first entry into the Challenge Cup tournament for Vancouver, which just completed its second season in Major League Soccer. This is the 10th consecutive year that the Charleston Battery have hosted the Carolina Challenge Cup.

The Carolina Challenge Cup is the premier pre-season tournament in the US. Each year for the past decade the Battery has been joined by three teams from Major League Soccer for the round-robin competition. Beginning in 2011 the tournament also featured a youth element as the MLS teams brought their USSF Academy sides to Charleston for a parallel USSF Academy tournament.

Carolina Challenge Cup tickets will go on sale Monday, December 3 at 10 AM. For more information please call (843) 971-GOAL (4625) or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.

VWFC add pace
Manneh selected 4th and Hurtado selected 5th

When it comes to finding players, there is one thing that you can never coach or develop. That my friends, would be speed. You either have it or you don’t.

So with the fourth and fifth picks in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Martin Rennie and his staff went with Kekuta Manneh and Erik Hurtado. And what did the ‘Caps acquire with these two youngsters? Speed.

And that is exactly what we could use.

Caps' Rennie says Reo-Coker "hasn't hit his peak yet"

Vancouver Whitecaps manager Martin Rennie is convinced: The best is yet to come from Nigel Reo-Coker, the English Premier League veteran who was officially announced as the club's latest acquisition on Thursday.

"He still believes and I believe that he hasn't hit his peak yet and time will tell if that's true or not," Rennie told media on Thursday afternoon from preseason training camp in Charleston, S.C., adding that he considers Reo-Coker "a big piece for us."

Leadership, mentorship for the younger players, drive and determination is what Rennie expects out of his new signing. That's in addition to the versatility that the 28-year-old brings in covering multiple spots on the field -- Rennie wouldn't commit to any one yet — with options including central midfield and right back.

VANCOUVER – In the Vancouver Whitecaps' first match without captain Jay DeMerit, it was the man wearing his armband who made the difference.

Kenny Miller, who was filling in for the injured DeMerit as Whitecaps' skipper, fired home the winner to help Vancouver defeat the Columbus Crew 2-1 in front of 18,078 fans at BC Place on Saturday. The Scotsman dispossessed Glauber 57 minutes in after the Brazilian lingered on the ball following a pass from Andy Gruenebaum, and Miller proceeded to racing in on goal and firing a shot past the helpless Crew goalkeeper

Martin Rennie must be under pressure. His constant tinkering with the side over the past year and a half is really destroying the team.

Whitecaps FC earn big 2-1 victory over Eastern Conference leading New York Red Bulls

Harvey and Miller score to end NY's 7 game unbeaten streak

HARRISON, NJ – With the odds stacked against them, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4W-4L-4D) responded by earning their first road victory of the season, coming back for a big 2-1 win against Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls (7W-5L-4D) at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

A second half own goal gave New York the lead, but tallies from Jordan Harvey and Kenny Miller gave the Blue and White all three points.

Vancouver is really kicking ass atm. Teibert has been a big addition this season. He's really improved over the last year or so. I also think it's key that Darren Mattocks has been bench. Physically, dude is a beast. Pace, power, agility, can jump out the gym, etc. But his finishing is shit and his footballing IQ appears quite low tbh. Camilo is much smarter, gets in better position. He's also pacey and good on the ball. I was surprised Camilo wasn't playing for a while earlier this season. Hard to see him leaving the lineup anytime soon now.

And what's up with this new goalkeeper Ousted? Knighton has been ok, his defense doesn't help out as much as it should though.

Outmanned
10-man 'Caps put in strong effort but come up short

VANCOUVER, BC – In front of a sell-out crowd of 21,000 fans at BC Place, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9W-7L-5D) saw their home unbeaten streak halted at 10 matches as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Philadelphia Union (9W-6L-7D) in a hard-fought match on Saturday night.

Inching closer
Skipper participates in full training

VANCOUVER, BC - There’s a light at the end of the tunnel for injured Vancouver Whitecaps FC captain Jay DeMerit.

Months after rupturing his Achilles tendon, the former U.S. national team defender is back on the training pitch and inching closer towards a return.

“First things first, it’s nice to be out there with the guys and, like I said, sweating a bit and getting some game-like movements back,” DeMerit told reporters after participating in a full training session Thursday at UBC. “That’s the first step.”

Any Vancouver/Canadian fans here? Gotta say, David Ousted looks a bit of a shit signing tbh. I liked Knighton, he's not great, but he's decent. Ousted just.... he seems like one of those Europeans that comes over, thinks MLS is shit and that they will be a god here, then realize that this is a pretty decent league and that they aren't all they thought they were.

Comeback for injured Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit may not be in cards at all this season

In the midst of a one-win-in-eight spell, the Vancouver Whitecaps could probably use the kick to the backside the return of captain Jay DeMerit would surely provide.

But it looks as if the 33-year-old's comeback to the first XI could still be a ways off.

The Green Bay, Wisc., native made the bench over the weekend in his first return to a match-day squad since rupturing his Achilles tendon on opening day. But to hear Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie tell it this week, DeMerit was there more out of a shortage of options and to provide a presence rather than because he stood a chance of returning to the field.

Vancouver Whitecaps' Jay DeMerit returns strong as ever in draw with San Jose

Days after Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie suggested to the media that Jay DeMerit might not play at all this season, the player did just that, coming on as a first-half substitute in Saturday's scoreless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Not that the Scottish tactician had much choice in the matter.

The club was forced to leave center backs Johnny Leveron and Andy O'Brien in Vancouver due to calf and back injuries, respectively, and that meant Brad Rusin made his first appearance in the heart of defense since suffering a severe ankle sprain against the Portland Timbers on August 3, playing alongside Carlyle Mitchell, the squad's only other fully healthy central defender.

But, as has become the trend with Vancouver's center backs this season, injury struck once again. This time it was Rusin, who was forced to leave on 31 minutes due to pain in his lower leg.
