I was at the Stade Olympique in Montreal for the inaugural match and it was well worth it! I was sitting just a few rows behind the Ultras (UM02) who made sure there was a good atmosphere, with their flags, drums, flares and even a choreography at the beginning.

Officially, the attendance was 58,912 which beat the previous record for a football match in the province of Quebec. I'm sure people now realise that Montreal was the ideal destination for a MLS expansion club, and the team will continue to draw great crowds. I will look forward to attending more games during the season even if I live in Ottawa.

As for the match itself, the Impact was no doubt carried by the crowd and showed some nice qualities in a match they should've won. We had a goal dissallowed in the first half and hit the crossbar with only a few seconds left before the end; that would've made the stadium explode! I was lucky because I sat behind the goal where Arnaud scored and where the crossbar was hit.

I've seen this being misquoted many times in the past few days. It may be a professional or Quebec club record (I'm not sure) but it is not the record for largest soccer crowd in Quebec.

At the 1976 Summer Olympics soccer final, 72,000 people witnessed East Germany's 3–1 win over Poland.

That's probably what it is.

The previous record was held by the Montreal Manic, a team I never even heard of before realising we were on the verge of beating that record.

That Hit The Spot
Corradi PK, Ubiparipovic clincher deliver Impact's second win

MONTREAL – Once again, the Portland Timbers will rue that last quarter of an hour.

The Montreal Impact scored twice in the final 15 minutes on Saturday for a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers at Olympic Stadium, the expansion side’s second victory of the season.

Bernardo Corradi struck on a penalty kick in the 76th minute after Timbers newcomer Steven Smith was whistled for a handball in the box, then an unmarked Sinisa Ubiparipovic delivered the insurance goal after finishing a Davy Arnaud cross at the far post in the 84th minute.

Portland have now conceded seven goals in the last 15 minutes of games this season.

Rivas appears in friendly as road back ramps up

MONTREAL – Former Inter Milan center back Nelson Rivas, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the Montreal Impact’s preseason trip to Mexico, made his long-awaited comeback during a friendly at Centre Claude-Robillard on a windy Sunday afternoon.

Rivas helped the Impact keep a clean sheet as they thrashed Dartmouth College 5-0 thanks to a double by Eduardo Sebrango and goals from Hassoun Camara, Josh Gardner and Evan James.

The Colombian seemed comfortable through the 60 minutes he spent on the pitch, winning the vast majority of his duels and running at ease. Rivas’ passing was a bit off in the early going, but he improved as the game went on, cleaning up his distribution and showing his passing range.

Canadian championship starts in less than a week

Inaugural tournament in 2008 put club on the map

The Impact took the first ever Canadian title back in 2008 as a second division club, and had been the only Canadian side until TFC did it this year (2011-2012) to advance to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League, and then qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament against Santos Laguna.

“There were two games that I feel were defining moments in our club’s recent history,” said Impact director of soccer operations Matt Jordan, who was the team’s starting goalkeeper that year. “The first was when we won the Canadian Championship in Toronto. That game gave us a lot of credibility in MLS circles.”

“To be a second division club that qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League group stage and advance to the quarterfinals against Santo Laguna gave our club more international recognition. Hosting the first leg in front of a 55,571 spectators; that is what put us on the map, especially throughout the CONCACAF region. Those events helped us get to where we are today.”

Kansas City, here he comes

Impact captain returns to where it all started

Last weekend, Impact captain Davy Arnaud had a homecoming of sorts, playing against long time team mate and friend Jack Jewsbury and the Portland Timbers for the very first time.

This Saturday, he’s playing against his former team, Sporting Kansas City, in the city where he spent the last 10 years.

“It will be pretty special,” said Arnaud. “Definitely when the schedule came out, it was one of the games that I took a look. Kansas City is a special place for me. I look forward to it.”

As much as he may be anticipating the return, the former U.S. international will have to adjust to the changes that come with being the enemy on game day.

“The whole weekend will be different feeling. Going to KC and staying in a hotel, sitting on the visitors’ bench, coming off a bus to the stadium for the game. It’ll be an adjustment, but I’m ready to go.”

Marco Di Vaio's agent said
Marco would consider an offer from Montreal

Federico Pastorello tells CSN's SoccerPlus that Marco Di Vaio could still join Montreal this summer, despite reports otherwise.

Responding to news report out of Bologna, that Marco Di Vaio shut the door on a two-year $ 3.8 million offer from the Montreal Impact, the player's agent says there is still possibility that his client could end up in Canada after all.

"I believe Marco is tired of seeing rumours sending him to North America. He's preoccupied to see Bologna avoid relegation and that's all that matters for him right now," Pastorello said in a phone conversation on Wednesday.

Bologna has six games remaining in Serie A after defeating Cagliari 1-0 on Thursday (Di Vaio was left out of the lineup for this one).

From Kansas City, Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Santis held a conference call with members of the media this morning to address statements made by Italian forward Marco Di Vaio from Serie A’s Bologna concerning interest in joining the Impact in MLS.

“The Montreal Impact is very pleased that the club is in consideration for Marco Di Vaio’s next career move,” said De Santis. “We made an offer to him for a year and half, plus two more at a club option. He will come to Montreal at the end of May to visit the club and see the city. There is still work to be done."

Road win!

Impact wins 2-0 in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The expansion Montreal Impact stunned Sporting Kansas City 2-0 at Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday night, handing the hosts their second straight loss – both shutouts – after a 7-0-0 start.

Montreal won their first road match and recorded their first back-to-back MLS wins in club history and are unbeaten in their last three matches. Sporting – who were coming off a bye week – conceded two goals in a match for the first time this year and saw their scoreless streak reach 205 minutes.

Felipe Martins’ goal at the half-hour mark put the Impact up 1-0, and Patrice Bernier iced it with a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

Rivas' dynamite debut
lifts Impact's defensive potential

MONTREAL — Montreal Impact fans had longed to watch him play, and the wait was undeniably worth it.

Colombian defender Nelson Rivas made a sensational debut to his MLS career on Saturday night in the Impact’s 2-0 upset of Sporting Kansas City.

Despite not having taken part in a competitive game since March 2011, the former Inter Milan center back turned in a Man of the Match-worthy 60 minutes and displayed his vast array of defensive skills, as evidenced by the five interceptions, six clearances and three recoveries he made, as well as the four tackles he won.

Impact could break attendance mark once more vs. LA

Theoretically, Saturday’s crowd could now reach 60,000, and the club is advising fans to arrive at the Olympic Stadium at least an hour in advance. Impact spokesmen would not confirm any further figures during training on Thursday, but kindly invited reporters to “do the math.”

The first-ever visit to Montreal by David Beckham’s Galaxy is certainly a factor in the impressive figures, and Montreal head coach Jesse Marsch is well-aware of that fact. He does feel, however, that Saturday’s game will be an opportunity to show Montreal supporters how much his team has grown.

“The last time we had 60,000 was like the coming-out party of our team,” Marsch told reporters. “Now I think our team’s moved along more, and it’s a more accurate representation of who we are. I expect us to be sharp and ready to go.”

Hey, don’t I know you?

With first string goalkeeper Josh Saunders is dealing with personal matters, former Impact goalkeeper Bill Gaudette has been promoted to the starting role. He is winless in three starts (0-2-1), allowing four goals against on 11 shots.

He played in nine games for the Impact last season, going 2-5-2, before an ankle injury injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. He has over 80 games experience in the NASL with the Puerto Rico Islanders, taking Goalkeeper of the Year honours in 2008, along with 17 games with the Columbus Crew in MLS from 2005-2007.

The Galaxy will also face an ex-keeper, as Donovan Ricketts should be playing in nets for Montreal on Saturday. Battle of the exes?

The Englishman’s curling free kick in the 62nd minute canceled out the Montreal Impact’s eighth-minute strike from captain Davy Arnaud as the LA Galaxy snatched a 1-1 draw on the road on Saturday.

Timothée Atouba on trial with the Montreal Impact

As per the Montreal Impact, the '' Lion Indomptable '' Timothée Atouba of Cameroon has joined the Montreal Impact on a 1-week trial as confirmed via the Montreal Impact official twitter account.

The 6'3 Cameroonian defender has been mostly playing as a left back during his career which included playing in the Swiss Super League, the English Premier League, Dutch Eredivisie and the Bundesliga. With Josh Gardner being injured and Tyson Wahl not playing very well (but not that bad) , it makes sense that the Montreal Impact would be looking for left backs but in the same time, trial players are proposed by different agents in a team's network so sometime the timing does not necessarily makes sense
