Canada 0-1 Greece (F)

Canada to play February friendly in Greece

Canada will visit former European champion Greece for a men's soccer friendly Feb. 9.

The match, at a venue to be announced later, will be part of Canada's early preparations for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Greece is currently ranked 12th in the world by FIFA, compared to No. 88 for Canada.

"Whenever you play a FIFA World Cup team, it is a special occasion," Canadian coach Stephen Hart said in a statement. "It was also not that long ago that Greece was a European champion, so the match will be challenging. Playing Greece in Greece will be good for us as we continue to develop as a team."

Venue announced for Canada-Greece away match

The venue, stadium and kickoff time for Canada's upcoming Men's International Friendly match against Greece has been announced. The two nations will meet this 9 February 2011 in Larissa, Greece at the A.E.L FC Arena. The match kicks off at 17.00.

This will mark Canada's first-ever trip to Greece. The two sides last met on 28 May 1988 in the Sir Matthews Cup in Toronto, ON. In the tournament final, Canada won 4-2 on kicks from the penalty mark
following a 0:0 draw with Greece.

Just last year, Greece took part in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The European club won one of its three group matches, a 2:1 victory over Nigeria. For Greece, currently the 12th ranked country in the world, it was its second participation at a FIFA World Cup™ (1994 and 2010). Just six years ago, Greece won the European Championship at UEFA Euro 2004.

A few tidbits
Gerry Dobson January 25, 2011

There was no shortage of interesting little tidbits that emerged at the unveiling of Canada's new soccer kit this week.

The CSA is working on another friendly in March. They're not ready to announce this one yet as it's likely to be on neutral ground somewhere, so it involves a third country.

What will Stephen Hart's squad look like for these matches? Hard to say. With MLS teams in the heart of training camp, this figures to be a European-based team. There are some injuries however. Most notably, Patrice Bernier broke his leg while playing for his Danish club Nordsjaelland. There are also a couple of more minor injuries but those players could be available when Canada faces Greece on Feb. 9.

A bigger concern is likely league schedules. This time of year matches get moved around due to domestic cup and European competitions. Nailing down the final roster won't be easy.

The same thing applies specifically to emerging star David Hoilett of Blackburn Rovers. Manager Steve Kean obviously likes him as the Brampton, Ont. native has become an integral part of Rovers attack. It resulted in his first goal for the club last weekend. Hoilett is eligible to play for Jamaica as well. Hart has broached the subject with him on a number of occasions, but he has yet to tip his hand. Since international friendlies no longer cap tie a player, the first opportunity to lock up any player in Hoilett's situation comes with the Gold Cup in June.

Wouldn't it be great if Hoilett had the attitude of aspiring goalkeeper Milan Borjan who plays for FK Rad in Serbia. Typical of many soccer players from that region, his family fled the chaos there and eventually landed in Canada, settling in Hamilton. You may be familiar with his story as it's starting to make the rounds. Borjan has made it clear that he owes everything to Canada and has made his decision. Hart would love to have him in Greece. At 6'4", he's an imposing figure and according to Hart, has a great command of his area and makes good decisions. Let's hope he's making the right one when it comes to declaring his loyalty.

With or without him, the Canadian team will trickle into Greece starting Feb. 5. They'll likely manage only one full training session before the game which we will have for you on Sportsnet live at 10am EST.

On an unrelated note, CSA general secretary Peter Montopoli is hopeful that the NASL will still get sanctioning by the USSF when they go back to the table early next month. The CSA is determined to have both Montreal and Edmonton take part in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship so this needs to get cleared up. What will happen though, is anyone's guess. Big trouble on the horizon there.

Canada announces roster for Greece friendly

Canada announces roster for Greece friendly
Men's National Team 03 February 2011

Canada has announced an 18-player roster for the upcoming Men’s International Friendly match in Larissa, Greece. Coach Hart and his team will meet this coming week to face former European champion Greece at the A.E.L FC Arena. The match will be played Wednesday 9 February, the first date of the 2011 season on the FIFA international schedule.

The Canada-Greece match will feature the debut of the new Canada Umbro kit. The Canadian match will be broadcast on Wednesday 9 February at 10.00 ET / 07.00 PT (17.00 local kick off in Larissa, Greece). Fans will also be able to follow the match live on http://www.twitter.com/CanadaSoccerEN.

Coach Hart’s selection features one debut: goalkeeper Milan Borjan. The 23-year old goalkeeper of Hamilton, ON plays professional soccer for FK Rad in Serbia. Borjan and Edmonton’s Lars Hirschfeld (32 appearances for Canada) are the two goalkeepers selected for this camp. Hirschfeld plays his professional soccer for Vålerenga Fotball in Norway.

Two other players have yet to make their first appearance for Canada, although they have both taken part in previous men’s national camps. Midfielder Tosaint Ricketts took part in his first camp in 2009 in Larnaka, Cyprus. Defender David Edgar, meanwhile, has taken part in several camps dating back to 2007. Both Ricketts and Edgar are 23 years old.

Borjan, Ricketts, Edgar, Jaime Peters, Simeon Jackson and Will Johnson are all 1987-born players. Five of those six players (all but Borjan) represented Canada at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007. One other player in the camp is younger: 20-year older defender Adam Straith.

As for experience, Hirschfeld, Dwayne De Rosario, Kevin McKenna and Rob Friend are all amongst the senior players in the camp. De Rosario is the leader with 55 appearances, while 27-year old midfielder Atiba Hutchinson is second with 50 appearances. Hutchinson, the 2010 Canadian Player of the Year, scored a goal and an assist in Canada’s last international friendly match on 8 October 2010 (a 2:2 draw with Ukraine).

Fifteen of Canada’s 18 players play professional soccer in Europe. De Rosario (Toronto FC), Johnson (Real Salt Lake) and Dejan Jakovic (D.C. United) play in Major League Soccer. De Rosario is a two-time national champion in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

MLSers in action as Canada fall to Greece

De Rosario, Cann, Jaković and Johnson earn caps in friendly

Canada fell 1-0 to Greece Wednesday in an international friendly, though MLS was well represented in the Canadian ranks as Toronto FC’s Dwayne De Rosario and Adrian Cann and D.C. United’s Dejan Jakovic all started and went the full 90.

Real Salt Lake’s Will Johnson started and played 82 minutes before being subbed off.

Cann and Jakovic formed the Canadian central defense in Stephen Hart’s 4-2-3-1, and he generally kept the Greeks quiet in front of 'keeper Milan Borjan.

The only goal of the game came midway through the second half when right back Adam Straith was unable to handle a Greek cross, clearing the ball to an unmarked Ioannis Fetfatzidis. The Olympiacos attacker made no mistake from 15 yards, going upper-90 and leaving Borjan flat-footed.

I'm happy with the performance. I thought Canada deserved a draw out of the match but it's only a friendly so no big deal. I don't know what the schedule is after Belarus, but I hope there are a few more games. These are the kind of games where Canada can improve, not playing against Argentina and losing 5-0. Looking forward to the Belarus game.
