Hirano sidelined for six weeks

March 17, 2010

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that defender Takashi Hirano has been sidelined with a knee ligament injury.

The former Japanese international suffered a mild strain to the medial collateral ligament of his left knee during pre-season training last week. As a result, the 35-year-old will be out of action for up to six weeks.

NSC Minnesota Stars 0::2 Vancouver Whitecaps FC

In their 24th and final season at Swangard Stadium ahead of Vancouver's move to Major League Soccer in 2011, Teitur Thordarson's side made the most of a sunny spring afternoon to claim their first three points of the new campaign. Second-half goals by Luca Bellisomo and Marlon James gave Vancouver Whitecaps FC a 2-0 victory over NSC Minnesota Stars in Sunday's USSF D-2 Pro League season opener.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will have a second Canadian rival in Major League Soccer, now that the Montreal Impact are locked in to join the league.

MLS announced Friday the Impact will become the league's 19th team at the beginning of the 2012 season. "I think it's fantastic," said Bob Lenarduzzi, the president of the Vancouver Whitecaps. "From a technical point of view, it provides players a chance to play at a higher professional level."

Lenarduzzi says he feels the addition will help inspire excitement for soccer in Canada, especially with the World Cup kicking off this summer.
The Impact are already big rivals with the Whitecaps. Their latest matchup ended in a 1-1 draw in the Nutrilite Canadian Championships. Wiith Vancouver entering into MLS play in 2011, Montreal's arrival in 2012 will only boost enthusiasm.

Whitecaps FC and Impact End the Night Where They Started

In a battle of the top two clubs in the NASL Conference, Vancouver Whitecaps FC recorded a second straight goalless draw in the USSF D-2 Pro League following a 0-0 home result with Canadian arch-rivals Montreal Impact on Saturday evening.

In what was their second meeting of the season at Swangard Stadium, these two Major League Soccer-bound clubs showed plenty of endeavour to find a match winner, but neither side could find a way past the two goalkeepers in Montreal's Matt Jordan and Vancouver's Jay Nolly.

Whitecaps Draw TFC 0-0

In their second match of the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship on Wednesday evening, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (0W-0L-2D) had to settle for a disappointing goalless draw with Major League Soccer (MLS) club Toronto FC (2W-0L-1D) at Swangard Stadium.

Seeking their first win in this year's competition, Teitur Thordarson's side worked hard to try and find a way past the Voyageurs Cup holders. Yet, as it has been in the past two home matches, the Blue and White were unable to find the decisive breakthrough, despite creating several decent goalscoring opportunities. It is the first time in the 36 years of the Whitecaps that the club have registered three consecutive 0-0 draws. Wednesday's result also extends Vancouver's unbeaten home record versus TFC to three matches (1W-0L-2D).

The bad news, of course, is that now Vancouver must win both their remaining matches, away at Montreal and Toronto, to win the Championship and qualify for CONCACAF.

Late Goal Decisive for Whitecaps FC in Montreal

In the first game of five matches on the road, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8W-3L-9D) defeated Canadian arch-rivals Montreal Impact (6W-8L-5D) 1-0 in the USSF D-2 Pro League on Wednesday evening.

Greg Janicki's late header gave the Whitecaps their second straight league victory at Montreal's Stade Saputo in less than a month. In a match that seemed destined to end in a goalless draw, Teitur Thordarson's side found a way in the dying stages to claim three valuable away points against their fellow NASL Conference foes.

Portland and Vancouver to find out who picks No. 1 in SuperDraft

HOUSTON -- The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps may be several months away from officially joining MLS, but the expansion clubs will be right in the middle of the action at the All-Star Game festivities on Wednesday -- during halftime of the match between the MLS All-Stars and Manchester United.

That's when a coin toss will take place to determine which of the two clubs gets the first pick among eight different MLS player acquisition procedures.

ESPN2 will carry the coin toss during halftime of its All-Star coverage. Timbers head coach and general manager Gavin Wilkinson and Whitecaps director of professional teams Greg Anderson will join MLS Executive Vice President Todd Durbin for the event.

On August 11, the two clubs will then take turns picking among the eight player mechanisms below, with each team claiming the No. 1 ranking in the specific player acquisition method they select. The winner of Wednesday's coin toss goes first.
The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps took part in an Expansion Priority Draft on Monday and the result saw the Whitecaps choose the option of having the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 MLS Draft.

Portland will pick second in the MLS Draft and will have the second pick in each round of the draft while the Whitecaps will have the top pick.

Vancouver chose having the top pick in the 2011 draft over a variety of other roster building mechanisms, including having the top pick in the MLS expansion draft. The Portland Timbers will have that distinction, giving Timbers head coach John Spencer the first crack at players left available by the existing 16 MLS teams.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh8Ct...ayer_embedded#

Vancouver Whitecaps FC took an important step in shaping the identity of their Major League Soccer (MLS) team today, as the club announced Teitur Thordarson as the team’s inaugural head coach when it begins play as the 17th team in MLS in March 2011. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"Over the past two-and-a-half seasons, Teitur has done an outstanding job as a leader, a motivator, and a teacher," said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. "His extensive experiences as a coach and player in the top leagues in Europe have had a huge impact on our club, as a whole. Teitur has a proven history of success, while setting very high standards, both for himself and those around him."
